USS Minnesota Powers Back to Guam After Historic First Virginia Class Deployment

The USS Minnesota returned to Naval Base Guam on July 29 after completing its first deployment, marking a major milestone for the Navy’s undersea force in the Western Pacific.

The nuclear powered fast attack submarine is the Navy’s first forward deployed Virginia class boat, a distinction that carries real weight in a region where sea control, stealth and endurance are not academic buzzwords.

According to a Navy release, the deployment strengthened the service’s ability to operate and employ advanced capabilities across the Indo Pacific.

That is the sort of quiet, lethal presence that gets noticed by allies, adversaries and anyone in Beijing pretending not to pay attention.

Minnesota is one of four forward deployed fast attack submarines, giving U.S. commanders a powerful undersea toolset from Guam. No parade is required when a Virginia class submarine slips below the surface and makes the strategic math harder for America’s enemies.

“Operating from Guam, this crew demonstrated the readiness, endurance and advanced capabilities the Virginia-class platform brings to … the Western Pacific,” Capt. Christopher Carter, commander of Submarine Squadron 15, said in the release.

The Virginia class fleet is built around stealth, nuclear endurance and flexibility, allowing boats like Minnesota to perform in both shallow and deep ocean environments. That combination matters because the Pacific is vast, contested and unforgiving.

During the deployment, Minnesota took part in Valiant Shield 2026, a multinational field training exercise designed to sharpen allied readiness.

The submarine also made port visits to Okinawa and Sasebo, Japan, reinforcing the close maritime partnership between Washington and Tokyo.

Minnesota then traveled south to Australia, where it visited HMAS Stirling and participated in Exercise Lungfish. That bilateral tracking drill between the U.S. Navy and Royal Australian Navy put a premium on undersea skill, coordination and the kind of hard practiced competence that cannot be faked.

The submarine also conducted operations in support of the Submarine Command Course, another sign that this deployment was more than a flag showing cruise.

Minnesota later stopped for a port call in Darwin, adding another allied touchpoint during a busy patrol.

While deployed, 20 enlisted sailors and two officers earned their submarine warfare insignia.

Those dolphins are not handed out for showing up, because they signify specialized training and expert qualification to operate complex undersea systems.

“The sailors aboard Minnesota represented the Navy with pride and professionalism, no matter the task,” Master Chief Electronics Technician (Navigation) Joshua Garrett, Minnesota’s chief of the boat, said in the release.

“Their readiness and effectiveness were evident throughout this deployment, and I could not be prouder of what this crew accomplished.”

Minnesota was commissioned on Sept. 7, 2013, in Norfolk, Virginia, and is the 10th Virginia class submarine to enter service. Its assignment to Naval Base Guam places it at the front edge of America’s undersea posture in the Pacific.

That forward presence is not symbolic. It means faster response times, more persistent coverage and a more credible deterrent in waters where Chinese naval expansion has become a daily reality.

This deployment also fits the broader national security approach President Trump and War Secretary Pete Hegseth have emphasized, which is peace through strength backed by real capability.

Speeches do not deter hostile regimes, but silent American submarines on station absolutely can.

For allies, Minnesota’s return to Guam is a reassuring signal that the United States is still showing up where it matters.

For adversaries, it is a reminder that America’s undersea fleet remains one of the most dangerous and disciplined forces on the planet.

Minnesota’s first deployment as a forward deployed Virginia class boat gave the Navy exactly what it needed in the Pacific: presence, professionalism and proven performance. That is how deterrence works when it is backed by sailors who know their mission and a submarine built for the fight.

Marine Corps F-35B Smashes Down on California Runway as Pilot Survives Fiery Mishap

A Marine Corps F-35B was involved in a serious aviation mishap Friday morning near Marine Corps Air Station Miramar in Southern California, with the pilot ejecting safely before being recovered by emergency crews.

The Marine Corps confirmed the incident in a statement, describing it as the military’s most serious category of aviation accident.

“We can confirm a Class A mishap involving a Marine Corps F-35B in the vicinity of [Marine Corps Air Station] Miramar,” the Marine Corps said in a statement.

“The pilot ejected and has been recovered. More information will be available as the situation develops.”

The crash happened at approximately 10 a.m. Pacific Time, according to the Marine Corps.

The aircraft was assigned to Marine Aircraft Group 11, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, and was involved in an unspecified mishap on the flightline at the base.

A witness told the Associated Press that the aircraft crashed while landing at the base, which would put the mishap at one of the most dangerous phases of flight.

The Marine Corps later said the pilot was in stable condition and was being treated at a local medical facility for injuries that were not considered life threatening.

That is the good news, and in a business where steel, fuel, speed, and unforgiving physics all meet at once, getting the pilot back alive is no small thing.

Local media in San Diego reported smoke rising near Marine Corps Air Station Miramar after the crash.

Aerial footage described by local outlets appeared to show the aircraft in a burned field just outside the base, a grim visual reminder that even America’s most advanced fighter jets do not come with a magic force field.

A Class A mishap is the military’s highest level of aviation accident classification.

According to the military, that category applies when there is a loss of life or when equipment damage exceeds $2.5 million.

With the F-35B, that dollar figure is not exactly hard to reach.

The short takeoff and vertical landing variant flown by the Marine Corps is one of the most complex tactical aircraft in the American inventory, built to operate from amphibious assault ships and austere locations where conventional fighters cannot.

That capability is part of what makes the aircraft so valuable to Marines, especially as the service keeps its eyes fixed on the Indo Pacific and the very real possibility of having to operate from scattered bases under enemy threat.

But complexity cuts both ways.

The more advanced the machine, the more unforgiving the maintenance, training, inspection, and operational tempo can become when anything goes wrong.

Marine Corps officials did not immediately release details about what caused the mishap.

They also did not provide a full damage assessment for the aircraft, though the Class A designation makes clear that this was no minor runway scrape or routine maintenance headache.

The incident adds to a troubling run of stateside aviation accidents in recent months across the military.

In May, two Navy E/A-18G Growlers collided during an airshow in Idaho, though all four crew members safely ejected.

In June, a Marine Corps F/A-18 Hornet assigned to Marine Aircraft Group 11, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, crashed near Mount Rainier in Washington state.

Then, on June 15, an Air Force B-52 Stratofortress crashed shortly after taking off from Edwards Air Force Base in California, killing all eight people on board.

That string of incidents will almost certainly draw attention from aviation safety investigators, unit commanders, and leadership at the Department of War.

No serious military force can shrug off repeated mishaps involving high value aircraft, especially at a time when America’s adversaries are watching every readiness gap like vultures circling a fence line.

The Marine Corps will now have to determine whether Friday’s crash was caused by mechanical failure, pilot factors, environmental conditions, maintenance issues, or some combination of factors.

That process can take time, because investigators must examine flight data, wreckage, maintenance records, training history, weather, and communications before reaching conclusions.

For now, the most important fact remains that the pilot survived.

Marine aviation is dangerous by nature, and every ejection is a violent emergency that can injure or kill even when the system works as designed.

Still, the loss or severe damage of a fifth generation fighter is a serious blow.

The F 35B is not just another aircraft parked on a ramp, but a centerpiece of Marine Corps plans for future combat against sophisticated enemies with long range missiles, drones, sensors, and air defenses.

The crash near Miramar is now another reminder that readiness is not a slogan.

It is built every day by pilots, maintainers, air traffic controllers, commanders, and inspectors who have to get the details right, because a mistake at this level can turn a billion dollar force structure into smoke over Southern California.

The Marine Corps said more information will be released as the situation develops.

Until then, the service has a live pilot, a wrecked aircraft, and a fresh set of hard questions waiting on the flightline.

Army Offers Up to $200,000 in Bonuses to Keep Senior Pilots as Aviation Ranks Shrink

The Army is putting serious money on the table to keep experienced aviators in uniform, even as it trims thousands of junior aviation slots and prepares for a future increasingly shaped by drones and uncrewed aircraft.

Senior pilots can now qualify for retention bonuses of up to $200,000 if they agree to remain on active duty for as long as six years. The program comes after the Army announced last year that it would cut 6,500 aviation jobs and shut down nearly all flying units in the reserves.

According to a July 26 Army message, the new Active Duty Service Obligation agreements are aimed at senior flyers and will be capped at a soldier’s 25th year of service. In plain English, the Army is trying to hold onto the people who actually know how to fly, train and maintain combat aviation readiness.

“This program is essential to retain rated aviators critical to the success of the Army’s mission,” officials said in the policy memo. “The rated aviator inventory will be reviewed each quarter and the [aviation bonus] program will be adjusted to meet the needs of the Army.”

That language may sound like standard Army paperwork, but the reality underneath it is much sharper. After years of losing seasoned pilots to commercial airlines, the service is now trying to patch a senior experience gap while also reshaping the aviation branch for the next battlefield.

Before the latest round of cuts, aviation retention was moving in the opposite direction. Congress and the military services had been scrambling to keep pilots from walking out the door and heading for better paychecks in the airline industry.

In the fiscal year 2017 national defense bill, Congress raised the maximum incentive pay available for military aviators across the services. The Army also began offering 10 year contracts to new pilots, hoping to keep them in the cockpit longer.

But piling up junior pilots did not solve the deeper problem. A chief warrant officer four with more than 20 years of service told Task & Purpose that the Army now has too many younger aviators and not enough senior hands to train them.

“We’ve recognized massive capability gaps in our tracked aviator pool, mostly because of the rise in airline hiring,” the chief warrant officer said. “They tried increasing accessions, creating [a] glut of junior pilots with no one to train them. But you can’t fix a senior experience gap with a bunch of new pilots.”

That is the part the spreadsheet crowd always seems to discover the hard way. Aviation skill is not manufactured overnight, and no PowerPoint from the Pentagon can replace thousands of hours of cockpit experience.

The bonuses are aimed at chief warrant officers, with monthly amounts tied to time in service and the length of the new commitment. Pilots with 12 to 14 years in uniform can receive $75,600 for agreeing to serve three more years.

Warrant officers with at least 18 years of service can sign contracts for four, five or six more years. Those deals can bring in between $120,000 and $209,880, depending on the terms.

The Army is prioritizing several key specialties, including instructor pilots, maintenance officers and maintenance test flight evaluators. Those roles are especially important for Black Hawk, Apache and Chinook helicopter units, which remain the backbone of Army aviation.

Bonuses may also be available for aviation mission survivability officers who fly Chinooks. That is a narrow but critical field, because survivability in contested airspace is not some academic talking point when American crews are flying into real threats.

The fiscal year 2026 retention push lands less than a year into a major aviation shakeup. Army officials said last year that the service would cut 6,500 active duty aviation jobs, including pilots, air crews and maintenance soldiers.

The reserve component is also taking a heavy hit. Nearly 4,600 Army Reserve soldiers are facing cuts as the service moves to eliminate its helicopter units.

Officials told Task & Purpose that most active duty reductions would happen through natural attrition, including retirements and career changes. Still, hundreds of junior officers identified as bottom performers are expected to be pushed out.

Aviators have said the overhaul damaged morale and left some soldiers questioning whether they had a future in the Army. That is not exactly surprising when the service tells one group it is cutting aviation jobs while offering another group six figure money to stay.

The strategic logic is clear enough, because the Army needs experienced pilots to train the force it still has while preparing for drones, uncrewed systems and a faster future fight. But the execution will matter, because combat aviation cannot afford a hollow middle where senior competence should be.

America does not win wars with buzzwords, it wins with trained crews, maintained aircraft and leaders who understand that experience is a battlefield asset.

Marines Get New Anti Drone Round to Blast Small UAVs with M4 and M27 Rifles

Marines are getting a new rifle round built for the ugly reality of modern battlefields, where cheap little drones can hunt troops, spot targets, and drop explosives with a price tag that would barely cover a Pentagon coffee meeting.

The Marine Corps is fielding the Drone Round 5.56 L Variant, a cartridge designed to be fired from standard M4 carbines and M27 Infantry Automatic Rifles, according to a Marine Corps acquisition spokesperson.

The round separates into five distinct projectiles after leaving the weapon, giving a Marine a better chance of hitting a small drone that would otherwise be a miserable target with a single conventional bullet.

That matters because small reconnaissance and attack drones have become one of the most persistent threats facing infantry units, especially in conflicts where low cost aircraft are being used like expendable flying grenades.

So far, the Marine Corps has purchased 400,000 of the rounds, and it plans to buy another 1 million cartridges in fiscal year 2027, which begins on Oct. 1, the spokesperson said.

The Corps has already started moving the ammunition to supply points, with all deliveries expected to be completed in September, according to the spokesperson.

Marine Expeditionary Force commanders will decide which units receive the new anti drone ammunition first, which is exactly the kind of battlefield focused decision that should stay with commanders closest to the fight.

The L Variant meets the Marine Corps requirement for a commercially available option that can disable or destroy smaller reconnaissance and attack drones, the spokesperson said.

Before fielding the ammunition, the Marines tested the round through several user evaluations, giving troops a chance to see whether the concept actually works outside of a contractor brochure.

The War Zone reported in June that the Marine Corps had announced plans to purchase the anti drone round. Separately, soldiers assigned to the 18th Airborne Corps tested the same ammunition against small drones in April at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

Kirk Fernandez, the CEO of Drone Round, said the L Variant is a 5.56X46mm NATO round effective out to 100 meters. He also said the company plans to offer a 7.62mm version soon, which would broaden the concept across heavier rifles and machine gun platforms.

The round is designed to work in standard 5.56mm NATO weapons without modifications or specialized equipment, Fernandez said. It can load into standard magazines and belt fed systems, and it is also suppressor compatible.

That is a major advantage because Marines do not need to wait for some bloated, yearslong acquisition miracle to begin addressing a problem already flying over the battlefield. They can use the rifle already in their hands, which is refreshingly practical.

Fernandez said the ammunition was built specifically as an anti drone cartridge meant to give shooters “a last line of defense against small drones using the rifle already in their hands.”

The round also gives troops another option against drones controlled by fiber optic cables, which cannot simply be jammed by electronic warfare systems. In other words, when the signal cannot be blocked, the drone still has to be physically destroyed.

“The projectiles stay together as they exit the barrel and disperse a few meters downrange,” Fernandez said. “This ensures the round is fully suppressor-safe while still opening into an effective pattern against aerial targets.”

The Marine Corps has been pushing hard to adapt to the drone threat, including the creation of an attack drone team and other organizations meant to test technology and refine training for Marines in combat.

The Corps has also fielded systems such as the SMASH 2000L advanced fire control system, giving Marines more tools to engage small drones before those drones become a lethal problem.

For a force expected to fight in contested littorals, isolated outposts, and rapidly shifting expeditionary environments, this kind of ammunition is not a novelty. It is a practical answer to a cheap, deadly threat that America’s enemies have embraced with enthusiasm.

President Trump and War Secretary Pete Hegseth have emphasized a military that is lethal, ready, and focused on winning rather than woke distractions, and this move fits that mindset. Marines need tools that kill enemy systems fast, not another seminar from the bureaucratic swamp.

The Drone Round will not replace layered air defense, electronic warfare, or dedicated counter drone weapons. But when a quadcopter is closing in and seconds matter, a Marine with an M4 or M27 may soon have a much better chance of turning that threat into falling debris.

Jungle Tab Finally Goes Army Wide for Soldiers Who Earned It

Soldiers who sweated through the Army’s jungle warfare school now have official permission to wear the Jungle tab no matter where the Army sends them.

After years of the badge being limited by assignment and geography, the Army has approved service wide wear of the tab as an official skill badge.

The authorization came in a July 22 memorandum signed by Jules W. Hurst III, Assistant Secretary of the Army for Manpower and Reserve Affairs.

The memo surfaced on social media and the Army subreddit before the Army confirmed that the tab is now authorized across the force, similar to the Ranger and Sapper tabs.

For soldiers who earned it the hard way, this is not some participation ribbon cooked up by a committee. Jungle school is a nasty, humid, exhausting test of survival, movement, navigation and small unit combat in terrain that seems designed by nature to punish the unprepared.

The Jungle tab traces back to the Jungle Operations Training Center at Fort Sherman in Panama.

That school, known to generations of troops as the “Green Hell,” produced soldiers trained to fight and survive in one of the most unforgiving environments on earth until the fort closed in 1999.

After Fort Sherman shut down, jungle warfare training continued in Hawaii.

The 25th Infantry Division’s Lightning Academy later ran the 12 day Jungle Operations Training Course, teaching soldiers how to operate in thick vegetation, oppressive humidity, rough terrain and water heavy conditions where the jungle itself is half the enemy.

Until now, soldiers who completed the Hawaii course could wear the tab only if they were assigned to units under Army Pacific.

That meant a soldier could graduate, earn the tab, then lose the ability to wear it simply because the Army moved him somewhere else, which is exactly the kind of bureaucratic genius the ranks know all too well.

That restriction is now gone. The Army’s move makes the Jungle tab a permanent skill badge, joining Special Forces, Ranger, Sapper and the President’s Hundred as tabs recognized for wear beyond a temporary assignment.

The memo also opens the door for retroactive recognition.

“Retroactive eligibility is authorized for service members who executed unit level raining at JOTC in Fort Sherman, Panama from 1990 until closure in 1999 or completed training at the Hawaii or Panama based Jungle Schools,” the memo says. “Retroactive eligibility is granted for both courses.”

That matters for older soldiers and veterans who completed serious jungle training but never had the same Army wide recognition their peers with other tabs received. Now, if they have the documentation, the Army is giving them a path to have the accomplishment officially reflected.

Soldiers seeking retroactive approval must submit a Personnel Action Request with proof that they completed jungle school.

According to the memo, that packet goes to battalion commanders for review and approval.

U.S. Army Pacific seemed to enjoy the long awaited decision, posting Friday evening, “And some of y’all said it was never going to happen.”

For once, the Army’s social media account captured the mood pretty well, because plenty of soldiers had assumed this common sense change would be buried forever in staff paperwork.

The Army’s jungle training footprint has also returned to Panama. The former Fort Sherman installation was transferred to Panama and is now operated as Aeronaval Base Cristóbal Colón, but the U.S. reestablished jungle school there in October 2025 as part of a broader return to former bases in Latin America.

That return comes as the military puts renewed focus on the region. Since reopening, the course has trained soldiers, airmen and Marines alongside members of Panama’s security forces, giving U.S. troops another venue to sharpen skills in a strategically important environment close to home.

The revised jungle course in Panama runs 21 days and is broken into three phases.

It begins with survival tactics, moves into combat skills such as ambushes and reconnaissance, and ends with the brutal “Green Mile” event.

For soldiers who have earned the Jungle tab, the change is simple but meaningful.

The Army is finally allowing them to wear proof of a demanding combat skill wherever they serve, instead of pretending the jungle stops mattering when a set of orders changes.

That is good news for readiness and good news for the troops who did the work.

In an Army that still needs soldiers who can fight in mud, heat, water and terrain that does not care about PowerPoint slides, recognizing jungle expertise Army wide is overdue and welcome.

The U.S. Air Force’s next leap in air dominance is moving from briefing slides into metal, software and test aircraft, with the F 47 program now inside its engineering and manufacturing development phase and still tracking toward a 2028 first flight.

Gen. Dale White, director of Critical Major Weapon Systems, said Wednesday that the program entered the new phase with “unprecedented maturity,” a notable statement in a Pentagon culture where big programs often arrive with more promises than proof.

White made the remarks during a keynote address at Life Cycle Industry Days in Dayton, Ohio, an event hosted by the Air Force Life Cycle Management Center.

His message was straightforward: the F-47 is not drifting, slipping or waiting for another blue ribbon review.

The engineering and manufacturing development phase is where the Air Force matures, integrates and tests the aircraft’s core systems.

It also produces a limited number of test aircraft for evaluation and includes priced options for low rate initial production.

White did not say how many test aircraft are being built, but the phase marks a major step for the Boeing program. For a sixth generation fighter meant to replace the F-22 Raptor, that is not a minor milestone.

The first Boeing F-47 is currently on pace to fly in 2028. The Air Force plans to buy at least 185 of the aircraft, matching the size of the F-22 fleet it is intended to replace.

“The F-47 will fly in this administration,” White said, giving President Donald Trump’s White House a clear marker on one of the most important combat aviation programs in the world.

That matters because the F-47 is not just another shiny aircraft for procurement charts.

It is the manned centerpiece of the Next Generation Air Dominance effort, a family of systems built to keep American pilots ahead of China, Russia and any other regime that thinks air superiority is up for grabs.

Trump announced in March 2025 that the Air Force would proceed with development of the sixth generation Boeing F-47 under the NGAD program. As usual, the president did not bury the lead in Beltway jargon.

“In terms of all of the attributes of a fighter jet, there’s never been anything even close to it, from speed to maneuverability, to what it can have, to payload,” Trump said at the time, insisting that the aircraft would be built and flying during his administration.

“And this has been in the works for a long period of time,” he continued. “America’s enemies will never see it coming.”

That last line is exactly the point. The F-47 is designed for a battlefield where stealth, range, sensors, electronic warfare and rapid adaptation will decide who survives and who becomes debris.

NGAD is described as a family of systems, pairing the F-47 with Collaborative Combat Aircraft that can expand reach, complicate enemy targeting and help overwhelm hostile air defenses.

In plain English, it is about making sure America’s pilots are not sent into tomorrow’s fights with yesterday’s tools.

The F-47’s modular design is meant to absorb emerging technology without forcing the Air Force into a slow, expensive rebuild every time the threat changes.

It is also expected to integrate long range strike capabilities for contested environments where enemies have invested heavily in missiles, sensors and layered defenses.

That is the kind of modernization Washington talks about endlessly but too often manages to smother in process.

Here, at least, the Air Force is signaling that industry partners and government program leaders are moving with unusual alignment, what White described as “extreme teaming.”

The money is already following the mission. The F-47 program received $3.45 billion in fiscal year 2026 funding, with more than $5 billion included in the fiscal 2027 budget request.

For the War Department, the stakes are obvious. If the United States wants to deter war, it must field weapons that convince adversaries they cannot win one, and the F-47 is being built for exactly that message.

The 2028 flight target gives the program a public clock, and White’s comments make clear the Air Force believes it can meet it.

After years of talk about next generation airpower, the F-47 is now producing test aircraft and moving toward the runway.

Navy Unleashes $76.6 Billion Submarine Push for Columbia and Virginia Class Boats

The Navy is moving another massive piece onto the national security chessboard, announcing $76.6 billion in contracts for the next wave of Columbia class ballistic missile submarines and Virginia class attack submarines.

For once, Washington is putting serious money behind something that actually matters: American deterrence, undersea dominance, and the nuclear triad that keeps hostile regimes from getting too adventurous.

The War Department is awarding $29.5 billion to General Dynamics Electric Boat for five Columbia class submarines.

Another $42.1 billion will go toward nine Virginia class submarines built by General Dynamics Electric Boat and Huntington Ingalls Industries Newport News Shipbuilding.

An additional $5 billion is being set aside for nuclear shipbuilding programs and shipyard infrastructure at both builders. That part matters because even the most advanced submarine designs do not mean much if the industrial base cannot build them on time.

“This historic investment underscores the department’s continued commitment to undersea superiority and the recapitalization of our nuclear triad,” said Vice Adm. Robert Gaucher, director of submarine programs.

“By securing the continuous production of both the Columbia and Virginia classes, we ensure we will continue to deliver the world’s most lethal, survivable and resilient combat platform.”

That is not Pentagon poetry. That is the basic reality of great power competition, where China is building ships at a staggering pace, Russia is still leaning on nuclear intimidation, and America cannot afford to let its submarine fleet age into irrelevance.

The Navy says it currently has seven Columbia class submarines under contract. It also has 26 active Virginia class submarines, with 23 more already lined up for future construction.

The Columbia class has become one of the Navy’s top priorities over the past several years because it is intended to replace the aging Ohio class ballistic missile submarines.

Those Ohio boats have carried a huge share of America’s strategic deterrent mission for decades, quietly lurking beneath the waves with enough firepower to make any enemy think twice.

The Ohio class is not exactly going gently into retirement. One Ohio class submarine participated in military strikes against Iranian nuclear facilities during Operation Midnight Hammer on June 22, 2025, a reminder that undersea power is not some museum piece from the Cold War.

The Columbia class is expected to bring greater stealth, survivability, and missile capability than the boats it replaces.

It is also expected to carry the Trident II D5 Strategic Weapons System and eventually support hypersonic missiles, giving America a sharper edge in the places where deterrence is measured in seconds.

Construction on the Columbia class began in 2020, but the program has not been free of headaches. The lead submarine was originally expected in 2027, but delivery has moved to 2028 after problems tied to steam turbines and the vessel’s bow and stern, according to USNI News.

That delay is exactly why long term production contracts and industrial base investment matter.

The country cannot snap its fingers and produce nuclear submarines, despite what some committee room dreamers in Washington might assume between cable news hits.

Government watchdogs warned early that the program could face schedule trouble.

A January 2023 report from the U.S. Government Accountability Office raised concerns because General Dynamics Electric Boat had not conducted a “schedule risk analysis.”

The Virginia class, meanwhile, is already a proven workhorse. Its lead ship launched in 2003, and the class was designed to replace the Los Angeles class submarines that helped define American undersea operations for a generation.

Virginia class submarines are built for a wide range of missions, from intelligence collection to strike warfare to supporting special operations forces.

Their reconfigurable torpedo rooms allow commandos to operate during long deployments, which is exactly the kind of quiet flexibility America needs in contested waters.

The Navy’s fiscal 2027 budget request totals $378 billion and includes funding for one Columbia class submarine and two Virginia class submarines. That request shows the service is trying to keep both the strategic deterrent and the attack submarine force moving at the same time.

The big question now is whether the shipyards can deliver at the speed the threat environment demands. Contracts are important, but steel in the water is what counts when Beijing, Moscow, and Tehran are watching.

This investment is a serious bet on American sea power, and it comes at a time when weakness is expensive and deterrence is priceless.

If the Navy and the War Department can keep the program on track, these submarines will help ensure that America’s enemies keep looking over their shoulders beneath the surface.

U.S. Locks in $58.6 Billion Patriot Missile Push as Stockpile Alarms Grow

The U.S. Army has awarded Lockheed Martin a contract worth up to $58.6 billion to produce Patriot interceptor missiles, a major procurement move that comes as America faces growing pressure on its missile stockpiles from Ukraine, the Middle East, and recent U.S. operations involving Iran.

The War Department announced the award Wednesday, and the timing is not subtle.

After years of sending weapons abroad while also burning through munitions in active operations, Washington is now confronting the very predictable reality that arsenals do not refill themselves.

The new Lockheed deal converts a one year $4.7 billion award issued in April into a seven year draft agreement.

The Army said the arrangement creates a multi year procurement plan for Patriot interceptors from fiscal 2026 through 2032.

That longer runway matters because missile production is not like ordering office furniture, no matter how many bureaucrats in Washington seem to treat it that way.

Supply chains, rocket motors, guidance systems, skilled labor, and testing capacity all take time, money, and seriousness.

The Patriot system has become one of the most important air defense assets in the American arsenal and among U.S. allies.

Its interceptors are designed to counter ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and aircraft, making them central to modern air defense in a world that keeps getting more dangerous.

The United States has supplied large quantities of weapons to allies, especially as the war in Ukraine has dragged on. At the same time, U.S. forces have used munitions in their own operations in the Middle East, including in connection with Iran related threats.

Those demands have sharpened concerns about inventories of critical air defense and precision guided weapons. For a superpower, running short on the missiles needed to protect troops, bases, ships, and allies is not a minor accounting problem.

War Department negotiators have been pressing contractors to move much faster.

Tentative production agreements reached earlier this year are now central to the broader effort to increase missile output before another crisis exposes empty shelves.

President Donald Trump’s administration has also increased pressure on contractors to put production ahead of shareholder payouts.

Trump signed an executive order in January aimed at identifying contractors considered to be underperforming on government contracts while still distributing profits to shareholders.

That is the kind of message the defense industry needed to hear, because patriotic press releases do not intercept incoming missiles. If companies want taxpayer dollars, they should be able to deliver weapons at the speed and scale the country requires.

Industry executives have welcomed the production agreements, but they have also argued that Congress must appropriate the money before companies can make major investments in parts, facilities, and expanded capacity. That means Capitol Hill still has to do something useful, which is always the tricky part.

Exact terms and delivery dates for many War Department munitions agreements remain under negotiation. That uncertainty matters because the operational need is not theoretical, and the enemy gets a vote while Washington debates paperwork.

A similar framework agreement has also been struck with RTX, the parent company of Raytheon, to increase production of Tomahawk cruise missiles.

Navy to Arm Aegis With PAC-3 MSE Interceptor, Strengthening Sea Defense

The goal is to move from the current U.S. production rate of about 60 Tomahawks per year to eventually 1,000 units annually.

Lockheed Martin, based in Bethesda, Maryland, said the new funding would help it follow through on a pledge to triple production capacity for the Patriot Advanced Capability 3 Missile Segment Enhancement by the end of 2030. The company also said it expects to grow jobs at its Camden, Arkansas, plant by 50 percent, from about 1,200 workers to roughly 1,850.

Lockheed has previously said Patriot interceptor production would rise to 2,000 units annually. The company also said it is investing $8 billion to $9 billion through 2030 to modernize more than 20 U.S. facilities, including new munitions centers in Alabama and Arkansas.

The Patriot Advanced Capability 3 Missile Segment Enhancement is a hit to kill interceptor, meaning it destroys threats through direct impact rather than relying on a traditional explosive blast pattern. That capability has made it especially valuable against ballistic missiles and other high speed threats.

The urgency behind the production push is reinforced by outside estimates.

The Center for Strategic and International Studies, a Washington based think tank, estimated this week that the U.S. military has fewer than 1,000 Patriot interceptors on hand and fewer than 250 THAAD interceptors.

Those two air defense systems have both seen heavy recent use in the Middle East. That is a flashing warning light for anyone paying attention, because American forces cannot deter adversaries with talking points and good intentions.

The $58.6 billion Lockheed agreement is therefore not just another defense contract.

It is a recognition that the United States needs a deeper, faster, and more reliable industrial base if it intends to protect its troops, support allies, and keep hostile regimes from testing American weakness.

Race for Cheaper Anti Ballistic Weapons Kicks Into Overdrive

The global race to build cheaper anti ballistic weapons is no longer a future procurement debate.

It is happening now, driven by depleted stockpiles, brutal missile barrages, and the plain fact that million dollar interceptors cannot be treated like unlimited inventory.

For decades, the U.S. made Patriot system and its PAC 3 interceptor have been the gold standard for stopping ballistic missiles.

That reputation was earned the hard way, because shooting down a ballistic missile is often described as hitting one bullet with another bullet, except the other side keeps firing more bullets.

The urgency accelerated after President Donald Trump made a blunt pledge during the NATO summit in Ankara earlier this month.

“We’re going to give a license to you to make Patriots. That’s pretty cool. This way, you can’t complain that we’re not giving ‘em enough,” Trump said.

That comment, delivered in classic Trump fashion, helped kick open a door that the bureaucracy had kept locked for years.

Five days later, Ukraine and nine European nations launched a coalition in Paris to develop Freyja, a new Patriot style anti ballistic system built around a Ukrainian interceptor that could cost roughly one fifth of a Patriot round.

Then Lockheed Martin rolled out its own lower cost Patriot option, the PAC 3 Adapted Capability Effector, known as ACE.

On Wednesday, the War Department awarded Lockheed another $53.86 billion for PAC 3 production, lifting the multiyear deal to as much as $58.62 billion and aiming to triple production capacity by the end of 2030.

The reason for the scramble is not complicated.

A new analysis by the Center for Strategic and International Studies estimates American forces fired at least 1,060 to 1,430 Patriots during the U.S. Israeli war with Iran, at roughly $3.9 million each, draining an estimated two thirds of America’s prewar Patriot inventory.

Ukraine’s war has added another brutal lesson. Kyiv can still counter many Russian threats, but ballistic missiles remain the hardest problem, and Patriot interceptors remain the scarce munition everyone wants until the bill arrives.

The current Patriot system pairs radar, command posts, and launchers with multiple interceptor families. Lockheed builds the PAC 3 MSE, the hit-to-kill round used against ballistic missiles, while Raytheon builds the older PAC 2 GEM T, which is better suited for aircraft and cruise missiles.

The PAC 3 MSE has proven itself in Ukrainian hands against Russian Iskanders, modified S 300s, and even the air launched Kinzhal, which flies at hypersonic speeds.

“This is a once-in-a-generation moment, and we are moving with wartime urgency to deliver the Arsenal of Freedom,” Lockheed chairman and CEO Jim Taiclet said in a statement.

Trump’s licensing pledge could make Ukraine only the second country outside the United States allowed to build Patriot missiles, after Japan.

Germany, the Netherlands, and Spain are working on joint production, while Berlin is pursuing its own license arrangements.

For Ukraine, the license would likely apply to missiles rather than full Patriot batteries, and may begin with final assembly from imported component kits.

Poland has offered to host production for obvious security reasons, because putting a fresh missile line inside easy Russian striking distance would be the kind of planning only a committee could love.

“It is about securing this production, so that this production takes place in a safe location,” Polish Deputy Defense Minister Magdalena Sobkowiak Czarnecka said in Washington on July 23.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said after meeting Lockheed representatives that “Our teams are already working on specific solutions to move to joint production as soon as possible.”

Still, licensed Patriot production will not be cheap. The PAC 3 would remain close to $4 million per shot, and Ukrainian officials estimate a pilot line may take 18 to 24 months before weapons start coming off it.

Zelenskyy wants the schedule tightened. “We expect that by the end of 2026, our Ukrainian team will have the technical capability to produce U.S. missiles,” he said on July 15.

Freyja is the more ambitious alternative, a complete anti ballistic system with interceptor, launcher, radar, and command network. Zelenskyy called it “an analogue of Patriot, but a system for more mass production and a cheaper system.”

The Fire Point designed FP 7.X interceptor flew for the first time in early June and is meant to destroy ballistic targets around 15 miles up with a high explosive fragmentation warhead.

Its projected cost is about $700,000 per interceptor, which is why Europe suddenly looks very interested.

“We have an ambitious goal: to have an MVP ready by the first half of next year,” Davyd Aloian, deputy secretary of Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council, told Reuters. “That is a prototype that can already demonstrate its first practical results.”

Lockheed’s ACE is another path, aimed at air breathing threats, cruise missiles, and close and short range ballistic missiles.

“American and allied warfighters need a solution that is battle-tested and budget-smart, and PAC-3 ACE delivers exactly that by building on the unrivaled performance of the PAC-3 MSE,” said Tim Cahill, president of Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control.

The first ACE flight is expected in early 2028, with international production under consideration and a price advertised at less than half of an MSE.

The strategic takeaway is simple enough: the West needs more interceptors, cheaper interceptors, and faster production, because hostile regimes do not pause their missile programs while Washington enjoys another procurement seminar.

Chinese Military Researchers Exploit U.S. AI Models to Sharpen Beijing’s War Machine

Chinese military researchers have been using outputs from leading American artificial intelligence models to train homegrown systems aimed at strengthening Beijing’s military capabilities, according to a Reuters review of more than 80 Chinese academic papers and patents.

The findings offer a blunt look at how China’s military and security establishment is trying to squeeze value out of U.S. innovation while Washington works to limit Beijing’s access to advanced chips and strategic technology.

At the center of the issue is “model distillation,” a technique in which the outputs of a powerful AI model are used to train smaller, specialized systems.

In plain English, China appears to be taking lessons from the best American systems and using them to build cheaper tools it can run on its own networks.

Reuters said its review included research compiled by the Washington based Jamestown Foundation and shared exclusively with the news agency.

The material showed the technique is being used widely by researchers tied to the People’s Liberation Army and other military institutions.

The papers suggest Chinese defense institutions view U.S. AI models as both a technical shortcut and a way to narrow the gap with American rivals.

That is not exactly shocking to anyone who has watched Beijing treat Western innovation like an all you can copy buffet.

The dispute is not over distillation itself, which is a common practice in the tech industry.

The sharper concern is unauthorized extraction from U.S. models, especially when the resulting capabilities could support surveillance, cyber warfare, targeting, or battlefield decision making.

The issue is now a major flashpoint ahead of U.S. and China talks on AI governance and safety. U.S. officials have accused some Chinese entities of using distillation to pull capabilities from American AI models, potentially undermining export controls and violating intellectual property rights.

China has rejected the accusations and accused Washington of AI “hegemonism,” because apparently Beijing believes the real problem is America noticing the pattern. Chinese developers have also pushed back on claims that their advances depend on foreign models.

AI startup Moonshot recently denied allegations by the Trump administration that its Kimi K3 model was built using distillation. The company claimed the model was driven by proprietary innovations.

China, Iran and Russia Hold Joint Naval Drills in Mideast

Sunny Cheung, a Jamestown fellow who analyzed more than 60 of the papers, said Chinese military scientists are systematically capturing the reasoning steps of Western models. He said they are adapting those capabilities for surveillance, cyber warfare, and tactical decision making.

“Teaching a model the right answer is one thing but teaching it the reasoning behind the answer is much harder,” said Cheung.

“These papers show Chinese military-linked researchers are trying to transfer that expensive, proprietary reasoning from Western models into smaller systems they can control and deploy locally.”

Reuters verified the academic literature and identified about two dozen additional military linked case studies.

One paper published last year by researchers in PLA Unit 96941, a military intelligence and cyber warfare unit in Beijing, described using OpenAI’s GPT 3.5 to process sensitive military source code.

The researchers said outside models were not suitable for classified information. Their workaround was to use GPT 3.5 to summarize software code, then train a domestic model on those summaries so it could operate inside Chinese military networks.

The White House, War Department, China’s foreign ministry, the PLA, and OpenAI did not respond to Reuters requests for comment.

The review found Chinese researchers using distillation for everything from content monitoring to military deployment.

At the North University of China, which has close ties to the weapons industry, researchers used Anthropic’s Claude 3 Haiku to generate synthetic training data for a text classification model focused on social media monitoring and content moderation.

Anthropic said it does not provide commercial access to Claude in China or to Beijing controlled firms. The company said it uses monitoring systems to detect policy violations and warned that distilled models may lose the original safety safeguards.

A 2024 paper from the PLA’s National University of Defense Technology described using distillation to shrink an image processing model for use on unmanned aerial vehicles.

That would allow drones to analyze live video and support navigation and targeting decisions even when communications are cut.

Researchers at China’s Academy of Military Sciences also used distillation to run a target recognition model on tactical hardware during simulated maritime operations.

Those exercises involved drones, ships, and unmanned submarines, according to a study published earlier this year.

China has embraced distillation as it tries to compete with the United States in frontier AI while dealing with Washington’s export controls on high end chips.

Central and local governments have promoted model lightweighting and edge computing for drones, satellites, and other platforms with limited processing power.

Still, experts warn that distilled models have real limits.

Chinese military researchers are also studying distillation as a security threat, including “data-free distillation,” a method of reverse engineering model capabilities without direct access to core parameters.

Trevor Koverko, co founder of AI data company Sapien, said distilled models remain less capable than their teacher systems.

“It is best understood as transferring selected capabilities into a cheaper, locally controlled system, not achieving independence from frontier AI.”
