Stephen A. Smith, sports commentator for ESPN, is known for “telling it like it is” in his sports analysis. He has recently begun commenting on the politics of America as well.
On April 18th, Smith went on The Sean Hannity Show on Fox News, where he called the hush money trail of Donald Trump a democrat strategy to try and keep Trump out of office.
What got him in hot water with the woke crowd, however, was when he agreed with comments Donald Trump had made previously stating that the black community should identify with him based on how he is mistreated by the justice system in America. Smith said, quote, “He wasn’t lying. He was telling the truth.”
However, Smith quickly walked back his statements in support of Trump following backlash from the African-American community.
“A lot of folks in Black America seem pretty pissed at me right now. From friends and loved ones to colleagues, contemporaries, and dare I say, even the NAACP itself.”
But what’s worse is that he didn’t even apologize for what he said, which was clearly supportive of Trump’s comments. (remember “He isn’t lying?)
Instead, he apologized for how his words were interpreted and misconstrued. What a lame cop-out.
His apology was not received very warmly in conservative circles.
The way I see it, Smith wants to keep his job at ESPN. He probably got a phone call from his boss saying either apologize for these comments or find a new job. This pseudo-apology was his way of saving face. Pretty lame, if you ask me.
