Jeff Bezos and Dave Limp pushed back on concerns that artificial intelligence will make human workers obsolete, arguing instead that the technology could dramatically expand what people are capable of creating and ultimately increase demand for human labor.
During an exchange with Mike Massimino, the discussion focused on whether AI should be viewed as a replacement for people or as a new tool that allows engineers and other workers to accomplish things that previously would have been too difficult or time-consuming.
“It’s not going to replace people necessarily. It’s going to be a tool for engineers to use,” Massimino said.
Bezos immediately rejected the idea that AI will make people broadly unnecessary.
“No, no, no. I know there’s a lot of concern that many people have, including many smart people, that AI is going to make humans redundant, and so on,” Bezos said.
“I totally disagree with this point of view, and I think in fact, AI is going to create a labor shortage because it’s going to make it possible for people to identify more problems.”
Bezos argued that humans are surrounded by an effectively unlimited number of problems to solve and products to invent.
In his view, the primary obstacle is not a lack of ideas, but the difficulty involved in turning those ideas into something real.
“We have an endless set of things to invent, and we are only limited, today, we are limited not by our imaginations, but by what we can actually do,” Bezos said.
He said ordinary people frequently have ideas for businesses, devices or products that never progress beyond the concept stage because creating them requires too much time, money, technical knowledge or effort.
“I promise you every single person in this audience has had an idea for a new business, or a new product, or a new device that they wish they could manufacture, and that idea stayed in your head and went nowhere,” Bezos said.
According to Bezos, the reason those ideas remain unrealized is often practical rather than creative.
“And the reason it stayed in your head and went nowhere is because it’s too hard to do and it wasn’t worth it,” he said.
Bezos described AI as a technology capable of shortening what he called the “dream build loop,” allowing people to move much faster from an idea to a finished product.
“And if we can accelerate the dream build loop, all of the ideas will then become possible, and then we end up being limited not by our capabilities, but by our imaginations,” Bezos said.
Limp said early versions of that dynamic can already be seen in software development. He pointed to the ability of large language models to help people quickly write computer code, including people whose programming skills may no longer be current.
“You can already see this some with vibe coding, right?” Limp said.
“You know, I was classically trained as a computer scientist, but three years ago, I was a terrible computer scientist.”
Limp said AI has changed what he personally can accomplish in a short period of time.
“Like, but now I can in just an afternoon write an iOS app and and I have some ideas for iOS apps,” Limp said.
He said large language models are particularly effective at coding because programming is symbolic, allowing AI systems to assist users in producing software far faster than they previously could.
“And and that that is one thing LLMs can do very well, cuz it is symbolic and so they can code very well,” Limp said.
Limp then extended that concept beyond software, suggesting AI tools could eventually provide the same kind of rapid assistance for building physical products.
“And then imagine the tools that they’re thinking about bringing that that I could in an afternoon do that in the physical world,” he said.
He described a future in which someone could conceive of a physical object and move quickly toward producing it through technologies such as 3D printing.
“And, you know, contemplate something and magically it comes off my 3D printer,” Limp said.
“I’m chomping at the bit. It’s so exciting.”

Taken together, Bezos and Limp portrayed AI as a force that could reduce barriers between human ideas and finished products rather than simply eliminate human work.
Bezos argued that making creation easier would lead people to pursue more ideas and identify more problems, while Limp pointed to software development as an early example of how AI can already expand what individuals are able to build.
