Court records show that Basin has already bonded out of jail.

Still, his ongoing pattern of behavior has raised alarms across Maui’s political community, which is growing accustomed to seeing this Democrat’s name in police reports instead of campaign events.

On Wednesday, Basin had to be physically removed from a town hall meeting after a heated argument with Maui Council Member Tom Cook and staff members.

Just one day after that eruption, Basin went on offense, filing a lawsuit in federal court accusing police officers of torturing him.

He alleged “prolonged and deliberate infliction of physical, sexual, and psychological abuse” at the hands of three officers and claimed it lasted 14 hours.

On his Instagram page, Basin wrote that the situation “will never happen to anyone again.”

This is hardly the first time he has crossed paths with law enforcement.

In early May, Basin was arrested for disorderly conduct in another unrelated incident. That case is still pending.

Despite the disturbances and arrests, Basin remains an officially registered candidate in Hawaii’s 2nd Congressional District, running as a Democrat.

State election records show he was given an active candidate report just last Tuesday, meaning that within days of poking the bear at a town hall and allegedly waving a gun, he was still officially in the race.

“I want to thank Todd Blanch, who couldn’t be here today, Colin McDonald, and everyone at the Department of Justice for leading this effort. I want to thank also the FBI, who you’re going to hear from in a little while, the HHS Office of Inspector General, CMS, and especially Dr. Oz, the White House Anti-Fraud Task Force, and Vice President Vance, and the investigators, and law enforcement personnel, whose relentless work made today’s action possible,” Kennedy said.

Kennedy said the arrests stemmed from what he characterized as a coordinated criminal scheme targeting programs intended to help children diagnosed with autism.

“Today’s arrest represent the largest autism fraud bust in American history. This was not a paperwork error, it was not a technical violation. This was organized threat, organized theft that exploited the most vulnerable children in America. Deceived families stole taxpayer dollars meant to help children with autism with autism access legitimate care and support,” Kennedy said.

According to Kennedy, investigators uncovered billing for services that never existed, fraudulent diagnoses, and false care claims.

“Investigators uncovered brazen schemes that build taxpayers for nonexistent services, fraudulent diagnoses, and fake care, while criminals enrich themselves at public expense,” Kennedy said.

Kennedy argued that fraudulent diagnoses and claims ultimately reduce resources available to children who genuinely need assistance.

“Every fraudulent autism diagnosis steals time, care, and resources on the children for whom this program was for whom this program was denied, and who desperately need this care,” Kennedy said.

He also pointed to broader concerns about autism-related spending and fraud within government health programs.

“America is facing a real autism crisis today. Approximately one in every 31 children is diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. Medicaid finances a significant share of autism-related services nationwide, and spending has risen dramatically over the last decade, and a lot of that spending is because of fraud,” Kennedy said.

Kennedy said healthcare fraud costs taxpayers tens of billions of dollars each year and cited estimates placing the broader cost at $100 billion annually.

“When criminals exploit these programs, taxpayers lose billions, and vulnerable children lose their access to care. Health care fraud now costs the United States 10s of billions of dollars every year. Some, as some has placed the broader cost of health care fraud and improper payments at $100 billion annually,” Kennedy said.

Kennedy warned that unchecked fraud threatens the future of Medicaid and Medicare.

“That fraud drives up health care costs for all Americans. It weakens public trust, it drains taxpayer resources, and threatens the long-term stability of both Medicaid and Medicare. If we fail to confront the fraud aggressively, these programs will not survive for future generations in the form Americans rely upon them today,” Kennedy said.

Kennedy credited President Trump and Vice President Vance for directing what he called the most aggressive anti-fraud effort in American history and said the operation was completed with unusual speed.

“Under the leadership of President Trump and Vice President Vance, this administration is carrying out the most aggressive anti-fraud effort in American history,” Kennedy said. “That this was executed with a precision and speed that is unprecedented in the history of law enforcement, and it’s unprecedented now under Vice President Fances leadership and President Trump’s direction we are going to normalize this speed.”

Kennedy said the administration intends to continue targeting fraud while protecting federal healthcare programs.

“We’re restoring accountability, strengthening oversight, prosecuting criminal networks, and protecting the integrity of our public health systems, we will not allow criminals to treat children as billing opportunities, while American taxpayers foot the bill. Kirk, 31, was shot and killed on September 10 while speaking with students at Utah Valley University.

“Hey Van, I mean it, I’d love to have you on my show to have a respectful conversation about crime and race,” Kirk wrote, according to the post.

He added, “I would be a gentleman as I know you would be as well. We can disagree about the issues agreeably.”

Jones explained that the two men had been “beefing hard” in the week leading up to Kirk’s death, making the outreach unexpected.

“Charlie Kirk and I were not friends. At all,” Jones said.

“That message shocked me.”

Jones said he wrestled with whether to share Kirk’s final words but decided it was important in light of public reactions following the assassination.

“In the past week and a half, just watching people talk about civil wars and censorship and all this stuff coming out of his death, I just thought it was important to let people know – Don’t put that on Charlie Kirk,” Jones said.

He continued, “The last day of his life, he was reaching out to have not more censorship, more conversation, more dialogue, with somebody who, honestly, was one of his adversaries – me.”

Jones said he hoped making the exchange public would serve as an example to others.

“Maybe it might help somebody, on both sides, deal with issues more like he did,” he stated.

Kirk’s death has led to widespread debate online, with some social media users posting celebratory or mocking comments in response to the violent killing.

The assassination has drawn condemnation from public figures across the political spectrum and has sparked discussions about threats facing public speakers on college campuses.

A public funeral for Kirk is scheduled to take place Sunday at State Farm Stadium in Phoenix, Arizona.

The venue is preparing for a large turnout, with officials estimating attendance in the tens of thousands. President Donald Trump is expected to deliver remarks, along with other national leaders and colleagues of the Turning Point USA founder.

Kirk rose to prominence as a conservative activist, building Turning Point USA into a major presence on college campuses across the country.

Jones, who shared the private message with his 1.4 million Instagram followers, said it was a reminder that Kirk sought dialogue even with those who strongly opposed his views.

“I think it’s important for people to see that,” Jones said.

There is no greater commandment than these.” The billboard drew condemnation from several religious leaders. The California Catholic Conference labeled it “unconscionable,” and a prominent Protestant pastor called it a “reprehensible act of gross blasphemy.” The Catholic League described the billboard campaign as “demonic,” according to Catholic Vote’s report.

In 2022, Newsom signed legislation making California the first “sanctuary state” for parents seeking transgender medical treatments for their children. The law protects parents from other states from prosecution if they come to California for services such as hormone therapy and puberty blockers for minors. The report states that in 2023, Newsom expanded these efforts further by enacting new penalties on school districts that do not actively promote LGBTQ content.

“He framed this as a matter of ‘families’ having ‘the freedom to decide what’s right for them,’” the report says. A spokesperson for Newsom, Brandon Richards, responded to the Catholic Vote report in comments to Fox News Digital. “We’re not taking seriously any organization co-founded by a political hack who has sworn allegiance to President Trump, called Pope Francis’ papacy a ruse, and justified cutting off U.S. foreign aid for the poor and hungry because he’d read some conspiracy theory about transgender mice experiments,” Richards said.

Richards added, “We encourage Catholic Vote, which does not represent the Catholic Church, to read Leviticus: ‘You shall treat the stranger who sojourns with you as the native among you, and you shall love him as yourself, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt: I am the Lord your God.’”

Catholic Vote endorsed President Trump in the 2024 election, and the organization’s founder, Brian Burch, was selected by the administration to serve as U.S. Ambassador to the Vatican.

The report also revisits Newsom’s quote from a 2008 interview amid California’s legal battle over same-sex marriage: “As California goes, so goes the rest of the nation. It’s inevitable.” Catholic Vote cites this statement as a warning of what it sees as the broader national implications of Newsom’s leadership.

“Few figures demonstrate the drift of America’s political Left – away from the Clinton-era language of ‘safe, legal, and rare,’ and toward today’s ‘#ShoutYourAbortion’ attitude – better than Gavin Newsom,” the report says.

Josh Mercer, Vice President of Catholic Vote, told Fox News Digital, “Americans have been shocked by the rioting and chaos in Los Angeles, but sadly, this reckless governance is all too common in Gavin Newsom’s California. As our new report, Newsom Files, points out, the California governor refused to deal with vexing problems like drug dealers, shoplifters and the rampant homeless camps.”

“Instead,” Mercer added, “Gavin Newsom was busy dreaming of the White House and spending taxpayer funds to put up billboards in Oklahoma that quote the Bible and urge people to fly to California to get an abortion. With his wacky priorities, it’s no wonder people are fleeing California in droves.”

The report concludes by warning that Newsom’s policies reflect a broader trend within the American Left that poses a challenge to religious liberty and traditional values.

The New York Post followed up with a report indicating that a key Biden aide may have been making unilateral decisions on what documents to approve using the autopen. According to the Post’s Steve Nelson, the identity of the key staffer responsible for these actions remains undisclosed. However, an insider speaking to the publication described the situation as deeply concerning.

“I feared no one as much as I feared that [staffer]. To me, [the staffer] basically was the president,” the insider said. “No one ever questioned [the staffer]. Period.”

Trump did not hold back in his criticism of the Biden-Harris administration’s handling of official documents, questioning whether anything Biden signed with an autopen is even valid.

“Crooked Joe Biden got us into a real mess with Russia and everything else he did, frankly. But he didn’t know about it, and he, generally speaking, signed it with autopen, so how would he know? That autopen is a big deal. I don’t know, you know? Who’s doing this?” Trump said.

He contrasted Biden’s alleged reliance on the autopen with his own approach to signing executive orders while in office.

“When my people come up, Will [Scharf] and all of the people, Steve [Miller], they come up… Sir, this is an executive order, they explain it to me, and 90% of the time, I sign it. 99% of the time, I say, do it. But, they come up, and I sign it,” Trump explained.

Trump then emphasized the importance of personally signing official documents rather than delegating the responsibility to a mechanical device.

“But, you don’t use autopen. Number one, it’s disrespectful to the office. Number two, maybe it’s not even valid because, you know, who’s getting him to sign? He had no idea what the hell he was doing. If he did, all of these bad things wouldn’t be happening,” Trump said.

The Biden autopen controversy raises questions about who is making critical decisions in the White House and whether presidential authority is being undermined by unelected staffers. With Trump continuing to highlight the issue, pressure is likely to mount for more transparency regarding Biden’s handling of executive actions.

The Justice Department has not issued a response regarding Trump’s remarks or the broader concerns surrounding the autopen scandal. A heated exchange broke out on CNN Thursday when Democratic strategist Xochitl Hinojosa clashed with commentator Scott Jennings over a protest at Trump Tower led by activists from Jewish Voice for Peace.

The group occupied the building’s first floor to demonstrate against the Trump administration’s revocation of the green card of Mahmoud Khalil, a pro-Hamas protest leader at Columbia University who was arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on March 8.

Jennings referred to the demonstrators as a “mob” that “stormed Trump Tower,” a characterization Hinojosa strongly disputed. The discussion escalated when she invoked the events of January 6, 2021, to contrast Thursday’s protest.

“What I want to remind you both, that it was Trump supporters who stormed the Capitol on January 6th,” Hinojosa said.

“When January 6th happened this year, what happened? It wasn’t Democrats storming the Capitol. Actually, guess what? No one stormed the Capitol this January 6th.”

Jennings immediately pushed back, pointing to footage of the Trump Tower protest.

“Did you look at the video in New York City today, the people who took over Trump Tower, the people screaming at folks on the streets? Who are those folks?” he asked.

Hinojosa insisted the event was a protest, not an act of force.

“People were protesting. People were protesting. They were not storming —” she said before Jennings interjected, “They stormed Trump Tower.”

The Trump administration took action against Columbia University after it failed to respond to the Joint Task Force to Combat Anti-Semitism regarding its handling of pro-Hamas demonstrations on campus. As a result, the administration canceled more than $400 million in federal grants from four federal agencies.

Hinojosa continued to downplay the Trump Tower protest, arguing, “They were not storming the Capitol. They were not — They were not trying to hurt a member of Congress.”

CNN host Abby Phillip added, “The lobby of Trump Tower is not Trump Tower.”

The protest follows months of escalating demonstrations against Israel since the Oct. 7, 2023, terrorist attack by Hamas that left more than 1,200 dead in Israel. Since then, anti-Israel activists have occupied buildings, chanted slogans with genocidal connotations, and blocked Jewish students from parts of campus at multiple universities across the country.

Jennings challenged Hinojosa’s defense of the protesters. “You are gonna defend that mob? I mean —” he started before both Hinojosa and Phillip interrupted him.

“There were thousands of people who were prosecuted for January 6th —” Hinojosa said, while Phillip interjected, “I’m not defending any mob.”

The discussion continued to spiral as Jennings reminded the panel of his past condemnation of the Capitol riot.

“You can scream — you can scream at me all you want, but I have every single day condemned the events of January the 6th,” Jennings stated.

“Then, now, and I will continue to do it.”

The protest at Trump Tower highlights growing tensions over pro-Hamas demonstrations in the United States and the increasing scrutiny on organizations supporting such activism.
