Vice President JD Vance said Thursday that several Democratic senators privately acknowledged concerns about their party’s strategy during the 43-day government shutdown, telling Fox News host Sean Hannity that they felt constrained by demands from the party’s most progressive members.

President Donald Trump signed a continuing resolution late Wednesday night to reopen the government after weeks of gridlock.

The resolution passed days after five Senate Democrats broke with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and voted to advance the measure, ending a blockade that had prevented passage 14 times.

Hannity asked Vance whether he had any private conversations with Democrats during the standoff. “Of course. Privately we were having conversations all the time,” Vance said.

“And, frankly, privately, the Democrats would recognize the position of their far left was crazy. But they all feel a little bit like they are being held hostage by their far left.”

Vance added that Schumer “probably ended his career, and he was the person who was fighting more than anybody to keep the government shut down.”

After the shutdown ended Sunday, several Democratic lawmakers, candidates, and political groups issued calls for Schumer to be removed as Senate Democratic leader.

Schumer did not vote for the continuing resolution that President Trump ultimately signed and continued to marshal most of his caucus in opposition as the shutdown persisted over expiring Obamacare subsidies.

“So, the far left, they are never going to be satisfied unless the Democrats are willing to burn down the entire country. Luckily, there were a few moderate Democrats who allowed reason to prevail,” Vance said.

He described some of the proposals pushed by progressive Democrats during the shutdown negotiations as excessive.

“They wanted $1.5 trillion, a lot of that [to fund] health care benefits for illegal aliens. They wanted us to undo all of the great border policy we have been doing. They wanted us to refund NPR and PBS,” Vance said.

“They were basically saying that we want the far left’s priorities to dominate in the Trump administration, and unless that happens we are going to set the entire country on fire. A really disgraceful moment for the far left of the Democrats and, frankly, a very revealing moment for the American people.”

Vance said the demands extended into areas affected by the shutdown, including commercial air travel.

“They were talking about, ‘Give us $1.5 trillion for health care benefits for illegal aliens, and unless you do that we are going to make it impossible for you to fly home to see your family on Thanksgiving,’” he said, referencing the severe disruptions that hit airports during the funding lapse. “It’s just craziness that that was ever their position, but it was.”

Hannity asked Vance whether the government would return to normal operations quickly following the signing of the resolution.

“It’s going to take a little bit of time to get everything fully up and running,” Vance said.

He added that President Trump opted to sign the measure late Wednesday night, rather than Thursday morning, in order to reopen the government “as quickly as possible.”

“It goes to show the entire time the president, the entire administration, we were focused on getting the government turned back on, getting critical services actually funded so the government could function for the American people,” Vance said.

“The Democrats were focused on, ‘We want to take you hostage. We want to make it hard for you to get home to see your family on Thanksgiving so that we can give your health care benefits to illegal aliens.’ What an incredible juxtaposition of priorities.”

Kansas Attorney General Kris Kobach announced criminal charges this week against Coldwater Mayor Jose (Joe) Ceballos, alleging that the recently reelected official cast ballots in multiple U.S. elections despite not being a United States citizen.

The charges were filed on November 5 in Comanche County District Court, one day after Ceballos won another term as mayor.

According to the attorney general’s office, Ceballos faces six felony counts — three counts of voting without being qualified and three counts of election perjury — for allegedly voting in the November 2022, November 2023, and August 2024 elections.

Ceballos is a legal resident of the United States but is not a U.S. citizen. Under both federal and Kansas law, noncitizens are prohibited from voting in any U.S. election.

All six charges are categorized as nonperson felonies. If convicted, Ceballos could face more than five years in prison.

Kobach emphasized that the case highlights a broader issue of noncitizen voting occurring in the United States.

“In Kansas, it is against the law to vote if you are not a U.S. citizen. We allege that Mr. Ceballos did it multiple times,” Kobach said at the announcement.

“Voting by noncitizens, including both legal and illegal aliens, is a very real problem. … Every time a noncitizen votes, it effectively cancels out a U.S. citizen’s vote.”

Federal immigration officials echoed those concerns.

Matthew Tragesser, a spokesman for U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, said the situation was “absolutely unacceptable and, sadly, no surprise given the years of lax voting security in the United States.”

He noted that the Trump Administration has expanded states’ access to tools used to detect noncitizen voting, including improvements to the Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements (SAVE) program.

The program allows state agencies to verify an individual’s immigration and citizenship status when determining eligibility for services or voter registration.

Kansas Secretary of State Scott Schwab credited the current administration for improving state-level efforts to identify noncitizen voters.

“We now have tools, thanks to the current White House, that we haven’t had in over 10 years,” Schwab said.

“That we can check through the SAVE program, to find out if folks end up on our voter rolls. And they could be a legal resident, but they’re not a citizen. We want to make sure that gets clarified.”

The charges against Ceballos follow a separate case earlier this year involving a noncitizen public official in Iowa.

In September, authorities arrested Ian Andre Roberts, the superintendent of Des Moines Public Schools, after discovering he was an illegal alien with a final order of removal issued in May 2024.

Roberts, a native of Guyana and former Olympic athlete, allegedly fled from immigration officers attempting to take him into custody.

According to ICE, Roberts sped away in his vehicle before abandoning it and attempting to escape on foot.

Officers, with help from the Iowa State Patrol and a police dog, located him in a wooded area near the road.

A search of Roberts’ vehicle led to the discovery of a loaded firearm, a fixed-blade hunting knife, and $3,000 in cash.

ICE also confirmed that Roberts had a weapons arrest in 2020, although the outcome of that case remains unclear. At the time of his arrest, Roberts was listed as an active voter in Maryland.

Both cases have intensified scrutiny over noncitizen participation in elections and the vetting processes used for public officials at local and state levels.

Sixteen individuals linked to an Antifa-affiliated group face federal charges following a July 4 attack on the Prairieland Detention Center in Alvarado, Texas, where a police officer was shot in the neck while responding to the incident.

The Justice Department announced the indictments and charges Friday, detailing a coordinated effort that investigators say involved weapons, explosives, and plans communicated through encrypted channels.

Nine suspected members of a North Texas Antifa cell were indicted on 12 counts related to the attack.

Those indicted are Cameron Arnold, Zachary Evetts, Benjamin Song, Savanna Batten, Bradford Morris, Maricela Rueda, Elizabeth Soto, Ines Soto, and Daniel Rolando Sanchez-Estrada.

According to federal prosecutors, they face charges including rioting with intent to commit an act of violence, providing material support to terrorists, conspiracy to use and carry an explosive, using and carrying an explosive, attempted murder of officers, discharging a gun during and in relation to a crime of violence, corruptly concealing a document or record, and conspiracy to conceal documents.

Six additional suspects — Nathan Baumann, Joy Gibson, Susan Kent, Rebecca Morgan, Lynette Sharp, and John Thomas — were each charged with one count of providing material support to terrorists.

A 16th defendant, Seth Sikes, was charged in late October with one count of providing material support to terrorists.

FBI Director Kash Patel addressed the charges in a statement to Fox News Digital.

“Anyone who targets law enforcement or uses violence to advance an anarchist agenda will face the full weight of the federal government,” Patel said.

“These are domestic terrorists, and under President Trump’s leadership, we’re finding them and bringing them to justice.”

Acting U.S. Attorney Nancy Larson noted the scope of the case, stating, “This is the first indictment in the country against a group of violent Antifa cell members.”

Authorities said the suspects were part of a larger militant enterprise made up of small groups and networks advocating for the overthrow of the U.S. government and law enforcement.

Attorney General Pam Bondi told Fox News Digital, “Antifa is a terrorist organization, and today’s guilty pleas — for violent assaults against law enforcement — mark a turning point in how the Department of Justice is approaching Antifa cases.”

She added, “At President Trump’s direction, we are prosecuting Antifa like we prosecute groups such as Tren de Aragua and MS-13. Expect similar cases to come as we dismantle Antifa.”

Federal prosecutors said 11 of the suspects took part in the attack on the detention center, which was being used to house illegal aliens awaiting deportation.

They were dressed in “black bloc” clothing with face coverings intended to conceal their identities.

Investigators said the group allegedly fired and threw fireworks at the building, damaged vehicles, and vandalized a guard shack.

Correctional officers called 911 as the incident unfolded. An Alvarado police officer responded and was issuing commands to Baumann when, according to prosecutors, Song yelled, “Get to the rifles,” and opened fire.

The officer was struck in the neck while correctional officers ran for cover. Song fled the scene but was captured by law enforcement on July 15.

Federal prosecutors said the cell had allegedly acquired more than 50 guns in the Dallas and Fort Worth area prior to the attack.

To coordinate their actions, they used an encrypted messaging platform with auto-delete functions, which investigators say permanently removed communications between some participants.

Members allegedly used monikers in group chats and conducted reconnaissance while planning what equipment to bring, including firearms, fireworks, and medical kits.

The nine indicted defendants are scheduled to appear in federal court for arraignment on December 3.

Now, that is what we’re really going to start clamping down on. [And] here’s the really stunning thing: This is just data from those 29 mostly red states.”

She said the administration intends to rebuild SNAP’s enrollment process to ensure that all recipients verify eligibility.

“It’s going to give us a platform and a trajectory to fundamentally rebuild this program, have everyone reapply for their benefit, make sure that everyone that’s taking a taxpayer-funded benefit through SNAP or food stamps, that they literally are vulnerable, and they can’t survive without it,” Rollins said.

Rollins added that President Trump directed the department to prioritize the review.

“The president has made this a priority. We will fix this program,” she said.

Federal authorities have made more than 120 arrests related to SNAP fraud since the review began.

Rollins told Newsmax, “There’s a lot of people already sitting in jail, but I think we’re just at the very tip of the iceberg with what we’re going to find.”

She also referenced concerns about the accuracy of past enrollment data.

In a post on X, Rollins wrote, “Why block transparency unless the truth is worse than the headlines? This is exactly what happens when a massive program runs on outdated lists and zero accountability. Not to mention the 40% increase in recipients under the Biden Administration.”

The administration’s plan requires all current beneficiaries to submit new applications and proof of need.

Rollins said the goal is to ensure the program serves individuals who meet eligibility requirements while preventing future irregularities in enrollment data.

The injured included two police officers, one Illinois state trooper, and one Cook County sheriff’s deputy. Local outlets reported that this was the largest protest in recent weeks and noted the presence of counter-protesters at the scene.

Broadview Mayor Katrina Thompson issued a statement condemning the violence.

“I have repeatedly pleaded to protesters to raise their voices, not their fists. They have chosen their fists. These out-of-towners have chosen to brutalize police officers who have been protecting their free speech and protecting them against assaults by ICE agents. We will see them in court,” Thompson said.

Border Czar Tom Homan reacted to the events during remarks to White House reporters.

“I was watching the videos before I came out here. When they put hands on law enforcement officers, they’re getting arrested and going to jail,” Homan said.

“That is where the Trump economy, I think objectively … is just doing better than any economy in 50-60 years,” Vance said.

He added that the president aims to “make an economy for people who can afford to buy the things that they need — the best way to do that is good jobs and good wages.”

Vance’s comments came as new international research reinforces the link between immigration levels and housing cost spikes.

In September, a group of economists in Denmark published findings that immigration significantly increases rents and home prices for local residents.

“Our results suggest large and positive impacts of immigration on private rental prices and house prices at the municipal level,” the researchers wrote.

“More specifically, we find that a one percentage point increase in the local immigration influx over a five-year horizon relative to the local population in the base year 1995 leads to an average increase of approximately 6 percent and 11 percent in private rental prices and house prices at the municipal level, respectively, during the same period.”

Their work adds to years of published studies pointing to the same conclusion.

Last year, Steven Camarota of the Center for Immigration Studies testified before Congress that “a 5-percentage-point increase in the recent immigrant share of a metro area’s population is associated with a 12-percent increase in the average U.S.-born household’s rent, relative to their income.”

Vance said the administration will continue pairing expanded housing construction with immigration enforcement to address the underlying pressures on the market.

Democrats redacted Giuffre’s name from the release, despite her being one of the most widely known Epstein victims.

NABU said that “almost the entire staff of detectives” was assigned to the final stages of the operation.

NABU described the alleged bribery and kickback scheme as large enough to qualify as one of the biggest corporations in the country if it had operated legally.

Investigators estimate that the money-laundering network moved more than $100 million.

The probe centers on allegations that contractors paid Ukrainian politicians to secure contracts with state nuclear power company Energoatom.

These contracts involved constructing fortifications intended to protect energy facilities from Russian attacks. Many of the sites were later destroyed by Russian strikes, leaving residents without power during winter.

Kickback payments were alleged to reach up to 15 percent of the contract value.

Ukrainian authorities said the suspected ringleader was Tymur Mindich, co-owner of the production studio Kvartal 95.

The company is known for creating the 2015 television series Servant of the People, which starred Zelensky.

The show depicted an ordinary citizen who unexpectedly becomes Ukraine’s president after publicly criticizing corruption.

Mindich is also a former business partner of Ihor Kolomoyskiy, the billionaire who supported Zelensky’s successful 2019 presidential campaign.

Kolomoyskiy was arrested in 2023 on charges of fraud and money laundering. Mindich left Ukraine shortly before investigators raided his home on Monday, prompting speculation in Ukrainian media that he may have been warned.

Reports indicated he may have traveled to Israel.

Additional figures tied to Zelensky’s administration have been implicated, though not all have been publicly named.

Those identified include National Security and Defense Council secretary Rustem Umerov, former deputy prime minister Oleksiy Chernyshov, former Energoatom security chief Dmytro Basov, and Ihor Myroniuk, former deputy head of the State Property Fund.

NABU and SAP are also investigating a separate scheme involving military procurement.

Prosecutors said that in some cases, Ukrainian officials purchased low-quality foreign-made equipment at inflated prices, with a portion of the proceeds allegedly returned to those arranging the deals.

Chinese-manufactured bulletproof vests were cited as one example.

The wiretaps collected by investigators included conversations in which suspects used pseudonyms to discuss payments.

In one recording, Chernyshov — referred to as “Che Guevara” — talked about a $500,000 kickback reportedly picked up by his wife.

Court hearings broadcast by Ukrainian public television on Thursday included a wiretap in which Mindich claimed to have significant influence over Zelensky.

Though no evidence directly implicates the president at this stage, the mention added political pressure as the investigation continues.

Zelensky’s standing has also been affected by public criticism over his attempt in July to place NABU and SAP under presidential authority.

The move sparked widespread protests and was ultimately reversed by lawmakers.

Critics have pointed to Operation Midas as evidence of why independent oversight is necessary.

The expanding scandal comes as Ukraine seeks to advance its bid to join the European Union.

EU officials have repeatedly stated that anti-corruption progress is essential for membership consideration.

Earlier this week, the EU said Ukraine had made improvements but still needed to enact more reforms.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz raised concerns during a phone call with Zelensky, emphasizing “the German government’s expectation that Ukraine press ahead energetically with fighting corruption and further reforms, particularly in the area of the rule of law.”

Zelensky responded by committing to “full transparency, long-term support for the independent anti-corruption authorities and quick further measures.”

Guillaume Mercier, a spokesman for the European Commission, said the revelations showed that “anti-corruption bodies are in place and functioning in Ukraine,” while adding that “the fight against corruption is key for a country to join the EU.”

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced a new $7 billion loan to Ukraine on Thursday.

Democratic Rep. Eric Swalwell of California is the subject of a criminal referral connected to alleged mortgage and tax fraud, according to a report from NBC News published Wednesday.

The referral was sent to Attorney General Pam Bondi by Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) Director Bill Pulte.

NBC News, citing an anonymous source, reported that Pulte’s letter said Swalwell may have provided false or misleading information on loan documents tied to his purchase of a home in Washington, D.C.

The same source told the outlet that the FHFA’s acting inspector general is conducting a separate review into the mortgage-related allegations.

The Department of Justice declined to comment on the matter. The FHFA did not immediately respond to a request for comment from the Daily Caller News Foundation.

Swalwell issued a statement to the DCNF responding to the referral.

“As the most vocal critic of [President] Donald Trump over the last decade and as the only person who still has a surviving lawsuit against him, the only thing I am surprised about is that it took him this long to come after me,” Swalwell said.

“Like James Comey and John Bolton, Adam Schiff and Lisa Cook, Letitia James and the dozens more to come – I refuse to live in fear in what was once the freest country in the world.”

Swalwell also said, “Of course, I will not end my lawsuit against him. And I will not stop speaking out against the President and speaking up for Californians. As Mark Twain said, ‘Patriotism is supporting your country all the time, and your government when it deserves it.’ Mr. President, do better. Be Better.”

The allegations against Swalwell follow similar developments involving other Democratic officials.

In August, Sen. Adam Schiff of California established a legal defense fund in response to a Department of Justice investigation into his finances involving claims of mortgage fraud.

Attorney General Pam Bondi appointed Ed Martin as a special prosecutor on August 8 to lead a probe into mortgage fraud allegations involving both Schiff and New York Attorney General Letitia James.

Lisa Cook, a member of the Federal Reserve Board of Governors, was also referred to the Department of Justice in August.

Pulte made that referral as well, according to the report, prompting a federal review of allegations regarding her mortgage documents.

Swalwell has been a frequent critic of President Donald Trump and has made multiple public statements about him over the years.

He has previously referred to Trump as a “dictator.”

The new criminal referral adds to the ongoing federal reviews involving several Democratic officials and follows a series of inquiries into alleged inconsistencies in financial disclosures and loan documentation.
