Following the assassination of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk on September 10, interest in the conservative student organization has surged on high school and college campuses nationwide.

In Texas, however, the push to establish a new chapter at Stratford High School in Harris County has prompted controversy and backlash from adults opposed to the effort.

According to the Harris County chapter of Moms for Liberty, Stratford students and teachers supporting the new TPUSA chapter were doxxed and targeted online by critics who attempted to pressure the school into blocking the club.

One post, circulated on social media, urged Stratford parents to contact teachers rumored to be sponsoring the club.

“Stratford Parents – I have an urgent request! Please please please send emails to two teachers who are rumored to have agreed to sponsoring a club that will sow division and hate among our students,” the post read.

“This is dangerous territory, and it would help if those teachers knew that their consideration was not appreciated by the remainder of the student body.”

The message specifically named individuals connected to the effort, including Denise Bell, who was described as “pushing for Stratford students to start a Turning Point USA club at the school.”

It also cited Gulf Coast Representative Javon Evans of “Club America,” the TPUSA-affiliated student organization.

The post claimed that a first meeting and social media presence were already underway without principal approval.

The online campaign went further, circulating a series of claims about TPUSA and its founder.

Among them were accusations that the organization runs a “Professor Watchlist” to target teachers, that teachers sponsoring a TPUSA club would be making a political statement, and that TPUSA has framed minorities and immigrants as “existential threats.”

Another claim suggested the assassination of Charlie Kirk was connected to “far-right rivalry,” despite police statements identifying the suspected shooter, Tyler Robinson, and his ideological motivations.

The post encouraged parents to send letters opposing the club to Stratford teachers, invoking concerns about students of various backgrounds and alleging that supporting TPUSA could “irreparably harm” those students.

In response, Moms for Liberty denounced the targeting of students and educators, calling it an attack on First Amendment rights.

The group publicly tagged Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, who weighed in on X.

“These are sick individuals. My office will review these messages for any violations of the law. The radical leftist culture of suppression must be totally defeated. We are not backing down, and we will not be silenced,” Paxton wrote.

The attempt to establish a TPUSA presence at Stratford High comes amid a broader national wave of student interest in the organization following Kirk’s death.

While the group has often faced criticism from political opponents, TPUSA chapters have expanded significantly in recent years across both high schools and colleges.

Officials at Stratford High School have not issued a public statement on the controversy.

The House of Representatives on Friday passed a resolution honoring Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk, who was assassinated earlier this month, but not without opposition from several Democrats, including Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY).

The resolution described Kirk as a “courageous American patriot” and a “devoted Christian.”

It passed despite resistance from within the Democratic caucus, with 58 Democrats voting against it, 38 voting present, and 22 not voting, according to Breitbart News.

Before casting her vote, Ocasio-Cortez delivered remarks rejecting the measure.

While she condemned the “horrific and vile attack” that killed Kirk, she argued that the resolution was “reckless” and accused Republicans of exploiting the tragedy.

“Instead of uniting Congress in this tragedy with one of the many bipartisan options to condemn political violence and Kirk’s murder, as we did with the late Melissa Hortman, the majority proceeded with a resolution that brings great pain to the millions of Americans who endured segregation, Jim Crow, and the legacy of bigotry today,” she said.

Earlier this year, the House voted 424-0 to pass a resolution condemning the assassinations of Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman (D) and her husband, and the attempted assassinations of State Sen. John Hoffman (D) and his wife.

The suspect in those attacks, Vance Boelter, was a political appointee of Gov. Tim Walz (D) and left anti-Trump “No Kings” fliers behind at the scene before being captured.

In her Friday remarks, Ocasio-Cortez characterized Kirk’s views as harmful, citing selected comments about the Civil Rights Act, the 2022 attack on Paul Pelosi, and Jewish donors.

“We should be clear about who Charlie Kirk was,” she said.

“His rhetoric and beliefs were ignorant, uneducated, and sought to disenfranchise millions of Americans – far from the ‘working tirelessly to promote unity’ asserted by the majority in this resolution.”

Kirk, during Turning Point USA’s America Fest in December 2023, had criticized the Civil Rights Act of 1964, calling it a “huge mistake.”

A Wired reporter covering the event noted that Kirk was specifically criticizing the creation of permanent bureaucracies he said undermined the First Amendment, not voting rights.

“The courts have been really weak on this. Federal courts just yield to the Civil Rights Act as if it’s the actual American Constitution,” Kirk said at the time.

Ocasio-Cortez’s claim that Kirk endorsed the attack on Paul Pelosi was also disputed by his full remarks.

Speaking on his show in 2022, Kirk said, “Why is the Republican Party, why is the conservative movement to blame for gay, schizophrenic nudists that are hemp jewelry-makers breaking into somebody’s home, or maybe not breaking into somebody’s home? Why are we to blame for that exactly?”

He went on to describe the attack as “awful” and “not right,” after suggesting someone might bail out the suspect to ask questions.

The claim that Kirk accused Jews of controlling education and media originated from a Media Matters report in 2023.

In fact, Kirk criticized “secular Jewish donors” for funding policies he said contributed to antisemitism following the Hamas attack on Israel.

“Jewish donors have a lot of explaining to do,” Kirk said at the time.

“This is a beast created by secular Jews. And now it’s coming for Jews.”

In addition to her criticism of Kirk, Ocasio-Cortez alleged that Republicans and the Trump administration were attempting to “weaponize” his death to restrict speech.

“All in the name of Charlie Kirk, President Trump and the FCC are now cynically threatening to shut down ABC and any outlets who give airtime to the administration’s political critics,” she said, referencing FCC Chair Brendan Carr’s comments about Jimmy Kimmel’s remarks following Kirk’s death.

Carr had stated that Kimmel’s claim linking Kirk’s assassination to conservatives could be viewed as an intentional effort to mislead the public.

Shortly after those remarks, ABC, Disney, and Nexstar announced that Kimmel’s show would be pulled indefinitely.

Kirk’s suspected killer, 22-year-old Tyler Robinson, admitted in a message to his partner that he shot Kirk because he had “enough of his hatred.”

Prosecutors charged Robinson with murder earlier this week.

Ocasio-Cortez concluded her remarks by expressing condolences to Kirk’s family.

“We continue to pray for Mr. Kirk’s family and loved ones in the wake of this terrible act. I am thinking especially of his children and his wife, whose grief cannot be measured,” she said.

The New York Times, for instance, issued a correction after attributing to Kirk a statement he did not make regarding Jewish communities.

The Washington Post also took disciplinary action after columnist Karen Attiah misattributed a claim to Kirk. Attiah alleged that Kirk said “black women do not have the brain processing power to be taken seriously.”

Kirk, during a July 13, 2023, episode of “The Charlie Kirk Show,” instead criticized affirmative action policies and named several prominent figures, including Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, former First Lady Michelle Obama, Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-TX), and former MSNBC host Joy Reid.

Kirk said, “If we would have said three weeks ago […] that Joy Reid and Michelle Obama and Sheila Jackson Lee and Ketanji Brown Jackson were affirmative-action picks, we would have been called racist. But now they’re comin’ out and they’re saying it for us! They’re comin’ out and they’re saying, ‘I’m only here because of affirmative action.’ Yeah, we know. You do not have the brain processing power to otherwise be taken really seriously.”

During her floor speech, Ocasio-Cortez also accused Republicans of undermining free speech by supporting professional consequences for individuals who made public comments celebrating Kirk’s death.

She referenced ABC’s decision to cancel Jimmy Kimmel’s late-night show after he mocked conservatives for disputing claims about Kirk’s assassin.

The attacker, later identified as 22-year-old Tyler Robinson, was confirmed by family members to be left-wing and supportive of transgender causes.

The resolution ultimately passed with the support of 215 Republicans and 95 Democrats.

The U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) announced sanctions on Thursday against the Los Mayos faction of the Sinaloa Cartel, along with the leader of its armed wing.

The move came as part of an effort to target cartel operations linked to fentanyl production and trafficking into the United States.

The sanctions coincided with a visit by Under Secretary of the Treasury for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence John K. Hurley to the U.S.-Mexico border.

OFAC designated five individuals and 15 companies tied to one of Los Mayos’ regional networks operating south of the border.

A separate designation targeted the leader of another Sinaloa Cartel-affiliated gang involved in fentanyl production.

“The Sinaloa Cartel is a foreign terrorist organization that continues to traffic narcotics, launder its proceeds, and corrupt local officials,” Hurley said in a statement.

Treasury officials said Los Mayos is responsible for producing and smuggling fentanyl, cocaine, marijuana, heroin, and methamphetamine from northwest Mexico into the United States.

In addition to narcotics trafficking, the faction has been linked to kidnapping, extortion, money laundering, and corruption of local governments in Rosarito, Baja California.

Officials described Rosarito’s proximity to the U.S. border as strategically significant for the cartel’s smuggling operations.

The Sinaloa Cartel has been designated by the U.S. government as a Foreign Terrorist Organization and is responsible for much of the illicit fentanyl trafficked into the country.

According to OFAC, the cartel has also engaged in human smuggling operations across the southern border.

Los Mayos is considered a rival to the Los Chapitos faction of the Sinaloa Cartel.

Both groups are active in Baja California, Sonora, and Zacatecas.

OFAC reported that turf wars between the two factions have resulted in more than 1,000 deaths in the Mexican state of Sinaloa.

The new sanctions effectively block cartel members and their affiliated businesses from accessing the U.S. financial system.

The designations also prohibit American citizens and companies from conducting transactions with the individuals or entities named by OFAC.

The rise of synthetic drugs such as fentanyl has significantly boosted cartel profits.

These organizations rely on steady supply chains for precursor chemicals imported largely from China and India.

By moving away from traditional plant-based narcotics like heroin and marijuana to synthetics, cartels have expanded their production capabilities and market reach.

Recent data illustrates the scale of the fentanyl crisis.

According to provisional data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in the 12 months ending in October 2024, the United States recorded 52,385 overdose deaths from synthetic opioids, representing a 33 percent decline from the previous year.

Overall overdose deaths fell by about 26 percent during the same period.

In 2023, synthetic opioids, primarily fentanyl, accounted for 74,702 of the 107,543 total overdose deaths in the United States—nearly 69 percent of all fatal overdoses.

Drug seizures by federal agencies also declined in 2024. The Drug Enforcement Administration reported seizing 21,936 pounds of fentanyl last year, down 29 percent from 2023.

The DEA also seized 61.1 million counterfeit pills in 2024, a 24 percent decrease compared to the previous year.

Data from the El Paso Intelligence Center’s National Seizure System showed similar trends, with 23,256 kilograms of fentanyl seized in 2024, down from the prior year.

Treasury officials said the latest sanctions are part of ongoing efforts to disrupt the financial networks that enable the cartel to operate, as U.S. agencies continue to focus on combating the flow of fentanyl into the country.

The Trump administration announced that it will direct $500 million in new funding to historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) and tribal colleges, marking one of the largest commitments to these institutions in recent years.

The plan also includes $137 million for American history and civics education programs and $60 million in additional funding for charter schools, according to a report by The New York Times.

To offset these investments, the administration has proposed reductions in other areas of the Department of Education’s budget.

The White House is requesting a 15 percent overall cut to the department next year, in line with President Donald Trump’s longstanding position that the agency should eventually be closed permanently.

The proposed cuts include $350 million from programs supporting minority students in science and engineering fields, schools with high Hispanic enrollment, and other minority-serving institutions.

Funding has also been reduced for gifted programs that the administration argues rely on racially targeted recruitment practices.

In announcing the new initiatives, Education Secretary Linda McMahon emphasized that the changes are intended to shift resources toward programs that advance merit and measurable results.

“Today, the Department is making three massive investments – redirecting financial support away from ineffective and discriminatory programs toward those which support student success. We are proud to make the largest investment in the Charter Schools Grants Program in the Department’s history, support American history programs that will inspire young people to be active and informed citizens, and recognize Historically Black Colleges and Universities’ and Tribally Controlled Colleges and Universities’ historic contributions to improving education and opportunity in our country,” McMahon said.

She added, “The Department has carefully scrutinized our federal grants, ensuring that taxpayers are not funding racially discriminatory programs but those programs which promote merit and excellence in education.

The Trump Administration will use every available tool to meaningfully advance educational outcomes and ensure every American has the opportunity to succeed in life.”

The decision reflects President Trump’s continued prioritization of HBCUs.

During his first term, he secured more than $250 million in annual federal funding for these institutions and forgave over $300 million in federal relief loans owed by HBCUs.

In April, the President signed an executive order creating a White House position to oversee a new Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

While that role has yet to be filled, the administration has said it remains committed to implementing the initiative.

The $137 million allocation for American history and civics education is designed to strengthen programs that encourage student engagement with the nation’s founding principles and democratic institutions.

The $60 million in new funding for charter schools represents the largest single investment in the program’s history, intended to expand access to alternative public education models across the country.

The administration’s education budget plan is expected to draw significant debate in Congress, particularly over the proposed reductions to minority-serving institutions outside of HBCUs and tribal colleges.

However, officials have framed the new funding priorities as part of a broader strategy to emphasize programs that they argue directly support student achievement and avoid discriminatory practices in recruitment and admissions.

For HBCUs and tribal colleges, the $500 million commitment adds to a series of measures by the Trump administration that supporters say has elevated the institutions’ financial stability and long-term prospects.

The announcement signals that education policy will remain a key component of the administration’s agenda going into the next budget cycle.

Former President Barack Obama criticized the suspension of Jimmy Kimmel Live! following backlash over Kimmel’s comments about the assassination of Turning Point USA co-founder Charlie Kirk.

Obama accused the current administration of engaging in censorship through regulatory threats.

“After years of complaining about cancel culture, the current administration has taken it to a new and dangerous level by routinely threatening regulatory action against media companies unless they muzzle or fire reporters and commentators it doesn’t like,” Obama wrote on X while sharing an article on the suspension.

“This is precisely the kind of government coercion that the First Amendment was designed to prevent — and media companies need to start standing up rather than capitulating to it.”

The controversy began with Kimmel’s Monday night monologue, in which he claimed conservatives were mischaracterizing the suspect in Kirk’s killing.

“We hit some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and doing everything they can to score political points from it,” Kimmel said.

Investigators, however, and the family of the suspect, 22-year-old Tyler Robinson, indicated Robinson held left-leaning views and had been living with a transgender roommate described by relatives as someone who “hates conservatives and Christians.”

Robinson was identified as the alleged gunman in Kirk’s public killing last week at Utah Valley University.

Kimmel did not issue an on-air apology for his remarks.

Federal Communications Commission Chairman Brendan Carr condemned Kimmel’s assertions, calling them “truly sick.”

Carr warned ABC and parent company Disney that misleading commentary of that nature could lead to regulatory review, including action against their broadcast license.

Andrew Alford, president of Nexstar Media Group, which owns dozens of ABC affiliates, also criticized the monologue.

He described Kimmel’s remarks as “offensive and insensitive at a critical time in our national political discourse” and said Nexstar stations would not air the program until “cooler heads prevail.”

ABC later announced that Jimmy Kimmel Live! had been suspended “indefinitely.”

The network has not provided details on when or if the program might return, leaving Kimmel’s future uncertain. His current contract runs through May 2026.

President Donald Trump welcomed the decision in a post on Truth Social.

“Great News for America: The ratings challenged Jimmy Kimmel Show is CANCELLED. Congratulations to ABC for finally having the courage to do what had to be done,” Trump wrote.

He added, “Kimmel has ZERO talent, and worse ratings than even Colbert, if that’s possible. That leaves Jimmy and Seth, two total losers, on Fake News NBC. Their ratings are also horrible. Do it NBC!!! President DJT.”

Donald Trump Jr. also weighed in, countering arguments from critics who called the suspension censorship.

He wrote that left-leaning media figures were now experiencing “consequence culture,” noting that inflammatory rhetoric has real-world effects.

The dispute over Kimmel’s remarks comes amid an ongoing debate about the role of late-night television and the boundaries of political commentary, especially following Kirk’s assassination.

For now, ABC’s suspension of Kimmel has amplified both regulatory scrutiny and partisan divisions over media responsibility.
