West Virginia Sends Troops to Back Trump’s Crime Crackdown in D.C.

The Trump administration’s ongoing efforts to reduce crime and restore order in the nation’s capital received reinforcement over the weekend with the announcement that West Virginia will deploy several hundred National Guard troops to Washington, D.C.

Gov. Patrick Morrisey, R-W.Va., confirmed Saturday that between 300 and 400 members of the West Virginia National Guard will be sent to the District of Columbia at the administration’s request.

The deployment, according to his office, will include specialized training services and equipment to assist local police, federal law enforcement, and the D.C. National Guard.

“West Virginia is proud to stand with President Trump in his effort to restore pride and beauty to our nation’s capital,” Morrisey said in a statement.

“The men and women of our National Guard represent the best of our state, and this mission reflects our shared commitment to a strong and secure America.”

Although specific units have not been identified, the deployment is intended to provide direct support for ongoing federal operations in Washington.

Those operations, launched by the Trump administration earlier this year, focus on cracking down on violent crime and addressing homelessness in the capital.

Maj. Gen. James Seward, the adjutant general of West Virginia, issued a statement outlining the Guard’s readiness to participate in the initiative.

“Members of the West Virginia National Guard stand ready to support our partners in the National Capital Region,” Seward said.

“Our unique capabilities and preparedness make the Guard an invaluable partner in this important undertaking.”

The additional support from West Virginia comes at a time when federal agents have already been dispatched to several neighborhoods in Washington.

Their presence has sparked a mixed reaction, with some residents and leaders praising the administration’s actions while others, particularly Democratic officials, have voiced opposition to the scope of the operations.

City leaders in Washington, who operate under federal oversight, are required to cooperate with the administration’s directives under laws governing the District.

At the same time, officials in the heavily Democratic city have expressed concern over the federal presence and the extent of control exerted by the administration.

The White House initiative in Washington follows months of heightened concern over violent crime rates in the city, which has ranked among the nation’s most dangerous in recent years.

The new deployment underscores the administration’s determination to implement a sustained effort in the capital.

According to federal officials, the strategy involves coordination among local police, federal law enforcement agencies, and Guard troops from multiple states to stabilize neighborhoods and address public safety concerns.

The Washington deployment comes as part of a broader emphasis on public safety under President Trump’s leadership, which has included calls for stricter enforcement policies in major cities across the country.

Administration officials have suggested that the model being applied in Washington could serve as a precedent for future operations in cities such as Baltimore, Detroit, and Los Angeles.

With West Virginia’s troops expected to arrive soon, the administration’s crime and safety push in Washington will expand further, combining federal and state resources in what officials describe as a critical step to restoring stability in the capital.

New Evidence Emerges in Adam Schiff’s Mortgage Fraud Case

Sen. Adam Schiff (D-CA) is facing intensifying scrutiny after newly released records revealed he secured mortgage rates as low as 3% on both his Maryland and California homes, despite federal prosecutors accusing him of misrepresenting his residency status to obtain financial advantages.

The Department of Justice alleges that Schiff, now the junior senator from California, improperly claimed two separate homes as primary residences for more than a decade.

That practice, prosecutors contend, allowed him to benefit from lower mortgage interest rates and reduced property taxes.

A Maryland grand jury is currently reviewing evidence in the case and weighing potential charges.

According to documents made public this week, Schiff refinanced both properties in 2020 and locked in rates of 3%, even though only one was designated as a primary residence.

That rate matched the national average for primary home mortgages at the time, while second residences typically carried higher rates.

Schiff had listed his 3,420-square-foot house in Potomac, Maryland, as a second home in 2020, 16 years after buying the property in 2003.

Neighbors say Schiff spends most of his time at the Maryland residence, which is now valued at approximately $1.4 million—almost double its original purchase price.

Meanwhile, Schiff designated his smaller 650-square-foot condo in Burbank, California, as his primary residence.

By doing so, he qualified for a homeowner’s tax exemption, reducing his property taxes by about $7,000.

Analysts estimate that the favorable mortgage terms and tax breaks saved Schiff between $30,000 and $50,000 over the 16-year period.

Financial disclosure reports also show Schiff’s personal wealth has grown considerably.

His reported bank assets rose to between $1.18 million and $2.63 million in 2024, up from between $1.02 million and $2.37 million in 2023.

In 2022, the year before he purchased the Maryland home, those assets were listed between $578,000 and $1.35 million.

The records further reveal Schiff did not disclose his mortgages on annual financial reports until 2011, years after he had purchased both properties. He has not offered an explanation for the omission.

Schiff, 65, built his national profile by leading the first House impeachment inquiry against President Donald Trump.

Throughout his career, he has frequently argued that “no one’s above the law.” Trump has openly criticized Schiff, labeling him “crooked” and a “low-life.”

“I have always suspected Shifty Adam Schiff was a scam artist,” Trump posted on Truth Social in July.

Federal prosecutors have accused Schiff of wire fraud, mail fraud, bank fraud, and making false statements to financial institutions.

Each of the charges carries penalties of up to 30 years in prison.

Schiff has denied any wrongdoing, calling the probe politically motivated.

“Since I led his first impeachment, Trump has repeatedly called for me to be arrested for treason,” Schiff wrote on X after the investigation became public in July.

“This is just Donald Trump’s latest attempt at political retaliation against his perceived enemies.”

Republicans, however, have rejected Schiff’s defense.

“Adam Schiff’s baseless smears of corruption against President Trump and Republicans have one simple explanation — he’s projecting,” Republican National Committee Press Secretary Kiersten Pels told The Post.

“Schiff is a proven liar, a con man, and a fraud.”

The Maryland grand jury has not yet issued a decision on whether Schiff will face indictment, but the investigation remains ongoing.

Gavin Newsom Appears to Make Damning Confession About Illegal Aliens and CA Elections

California Governor Gavin Newsom announced Thursday that the state will hold a special election in November asking voters whether to “temporarily” suspend the voter-approved independent redistricting commission and allow state lawmakers to draw new political maps.

Democrats currently hold a supermajority in the California state legislature.

The announcement comes as redistricting battles continue across the country.

The proposed change would give California’s Democratic majority direct authority to shape new districts.

Critics note the timing coincides with new maps in Texas that are expected to favor Republicans in the 2026 elections.

Newsom made the announcement during a public rally.

“We can’t stand back and watch this democracy disappear district by district all across the country,” he said.

The governor has previously remained silent when Democrat-led states such as Illinois and Maryland approved heavily gerrymandered maps to secure or expand their congressional representation.

Following his announcement, Newsom gave several interviews to local and national media outlets to promote the special election measure.

During one Fox Los Angeles interview, Newsom addressed the presence of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents who had appeared outside his Thursday event.

He described their presence as a warning sign. “A preview of what was to come at polling places and in front of voting booths,” Newsom said, suggesting ICE would be sent there by President Trump to “intimidate people.”

The remarks drew immediate attention, including from United States Attorney Bill Essayli of the Central District of California. Essayli raised concerns over the governor’s comments and posed questions regarding what exactly Newsom meant by linking ICE enforcement to polling places.

Though Newsom did not directly respond to Essayli, he did engage with users on social media.

In response to one user on X who suggested that ICE agents at polling places might be a way to challenge his proposed redistricting measure, Newsom wrote: “Undocumented immigrants don’t vote in statewide elections. That precious right is only for U.S. citizens.”

The statement appeared to contradict the implication made during his earlier Fox Los Angeles interview.

Newsom’s comments about ICE presence near polling locations were interpreted by some as acknowledging concerns about illegal aliens voting in California elections, an issue that has been a point of contention in debates over voter identification laws.

California Democrats, including Newsom, have consistently opposed voter ID requirements, arguing such measures would restrict access to the ballot.

The November special election will ask Californians to decide whether to suspend the state’s independent redistricting commission process and instead allow maps to be drawn by the legislature.

The commission was originally created by voter initiative to reduce political influence in map drawing and ensure fairer representation.

If voters approve the measure, the legislature would have the authority to produce maps that would apply in time for the 2026 election cycle.

With Democrats holding a supermajority, any new maps would likely secure the party’s representation in both Congress and the state legislature.

The special election represents a significant shift in California’s approach to redistricting, potentially setting up legal and political challenges.

Observers note that while Newsom framed the change as necessary to protect democracy, the effect would be to centralize redistricting power in the hands of the legislature, dominated by his own party.

As November approaches, both the redistricting measure and Newsom’s comments about ICE agents at polling locations are expected to remain under scrutiny.

Kristi Noem Reveals the Staggering Number of Illegal Aliens That Have Self Deported

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem announced Thursday that nearly two million illegal aliens have self-deported since President Donald Trump took office in January.

According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the agency has launched several initiatives aimed at encouraging voluntary departures, resulting in what officials describe as a significant reduction in the illegal immigrant population.

“In her first 200 days as secretary, DHS also launched an international, multimillion-dollar ad campaign warning illegal aliens to LEAVE NOW because if they don’t, we will arrest them and deport them,” the agency said in a statement.

“This new data shows illegal aliens are hearing our message.”

The department also confirmed that Noem ended the CBP One App — a program that had allowed more than one million migrants to enter the United States — and replaced it with the CBP Home App.

Under the rebranded system, part of Operation Homecoming, individuals in the country illegally can arrange their own departure.

“The American people are generously offering illegal aliens $1,000 and a free flight to self-deport now,” the statement said.

DHS officials said the new process is designed to give those without legal status “control of their departure” while reducing the burden on immigration enforcement resources.

DHS said the decrease in the illegal immigrant population is already having a measurable effect across the country.

“The rapid decline in the illegal immigrant population is already being felt nationwide, from reduced strain on public services to a resurgence in local job markets,” the agency stated.

The department’s announcement comes as the administration continues targeted enforcement operations in areas with policies limiting cooperation with federal immigration authorities.

DHS officials said these operations are now underway in multiple states, with a focus on major “sanctuary” jurisdictions.

Washington, D.C., is among the most recent areas targeted by the administration’s immigration enforcement strategy.

The District has been the subject of several high-profile operations since President Trump authorized increased federal involvement in local law enforcement earlier this summer.

Officials have not released a detailed breakdown of the locations or demographics of those who have self-deported, but DHS indicated that the figures represent a nationwide trend.

The department also noted that the combination of public messaging campaigns, new technology, and direct enforcement actions has contributed to the accelerated pace of voluntary departures.

The self-deportation initiative is part of a broader set of immigration enforcement measures launched since January, which includes increased deportation flights, expanded coordination with foreign governments, and stepped-up workplace enforcement actions targeting employers who knowingly hire individuals without legal status.

DHS said it will continue to release updated statistics as the programs progress and additional data becomes available.

NJ Pharma Executive Charged After 103 MPH Wrong-Way Crash Kills Olympic Swimmer

A New Jersey pharmaceutical executive is facing multiple charges, including aggravated manslaughter and vehicular homicide, after allegedly driving more than 100 mph in the wrong direction and causing a fatal head-on collision that killed a former Olympic swimmer, as reported by The New York Post.

Prosecutors say 47-year-old Brian Baldari drove his Cadillac CT5 Blackwing in the wrong direction down Route 70 in Lakewood for approximately two miles before colliding with 66-year-old Edwin Borja’s Mazda CX5 on March 23.

The Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office announced the charges on Wednesday.

The crash occurred at around 5:50 a.m. Baldari’s vehicle struck Borja’s car head-on before hitting six other vehicles. Responding officers from the Lakewood Township Police Department found Baldari’s Cadillac on fire with him trapped inside.

First responders pulled him from the vehicle, and he was airlifted to Jersey Shore University Medical Center before being transferred to Weill Cornell Medicine Burn Center in New York City.

Borja, a former Filipino Olympic swimmer, was also airlifted to Jersey Shore University Medical Center. He died from his injuries 11 days later. A third driver was injured in the crash, treated at Ocean University Medical Center, and later released.

According to investigators, Baldari’s vehicle reached speeds of up to 103 mph. Following a months-long investigation, prosecutors charged him with aggravated manslaughter, vehicular homicide, and assault by auto. If convicted, he faces up to 50 years in prison.

Baldari surrendered to Lakewood police on Wednesday and was booked into the Ocean County Jail, where he will remain pending a detention hearing, according to Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer.

Baldari’s LinkedIn profile describes him as an “award-winning” and “seasoned Biopharmaceutical Executive” with more than a decade of industry experience, claiming a record of launching 14 blockbuster brands.

A Rutgers University graduate, he is currently employed as Vice President of Franchise Portfolio Management-Cardiometabolics, Ophthalmology, and Respiratory at Azurity Pharmaceuticals in North Carolina.

Borja, who immigrated to the United States from the Philippines with his family in 1971, competed for the Philippines at the 1972 Munich Olympics and the 1976 Montreal Olympics.

His events included the 1,500-meter freestyle, 4 × 200-meter freestyle relay, 400-meter freestyle, 200-meter butterfly, and 400-meter individual medley.

Borja earned his degree from La Salle University in Pennsylvania and worked as a controller for Dana Companies. He was active in Saint Andrew Catholic Church, sang in the choir, and enjoyed bowling. He is survived by two children and four grandchildren.

His wife, Marieta Espe Borja, died in 2019.

CNN Panelist Dismantles Gavin Newsom’s Redistricting in Under 30 Seconds

California Governor Gavin Newsom announced Thursday in Los Angeles that the state will hold a special election on November 4 for a ballot initiative to adopt a new Democratic-led redistricting plan ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.

The proposal, unveiled during a public address, drew sharp criticism from CNN Senior Political Commentator Scott Jennings, who argued that Newsom’s plan undermines his stated opposition to gerrymandering.

Speaking on CNN’s “The Arena With Kasie Hunt,” Jennings said the governor’s remarks revealed a contradiction between his stated principles and proposed actions.

“Let me summarize Gavin Newsom’s speech today: gerrymandering is evil, please vote for my gerrymandering,” Jennings said.

“Of course he failed to mention that it’s already gerrymandered — Republicans get 40% of the vote in California, they have 17% of the congressional seats under a supposed independent redistricting commission — so we’re gonna further gerrymander the gerrymandering.”

According to PolitiFact, Republicans routinely receive about 40% of the statewide vote in California but hold just 9 of the state’s 52 congressional seats, representing 17% of the delegation.

California’s congressional maps are currently drawn by an independent redistricting commission, established in 2010 through a ballot measure intended to reduce partisan control.

Critics argue that despite the commission’s role, the current district boundaries favor Democrats significantly.

Newsom’s announcement comes as national debates over redistricting intensify ahead of the next election cycle.

Democrats have accused Texas Republicans of manipulating district boundaries before 2026, while Republican lawmakers point to similar practices by Democrats in other states.

Jennings referenced the inconsistency in how such disputes are covered, noting that major news outlets have amplified Texas Democrats’ claims of defending democracy while giving less attention to similar issues in Democratic-controlled states.

Illinois has been cited as one example of a heavily skewed map. Despite President Donald Trump receiving over 43.5% of the statewide vote in 2024, Democrats control 82% of Illinois’ U.S. House seats.

In 2021, Texas Democrats left the state for Illinois to block a vote on Republican-backed election legislation, drawing criticism from opponents who pointed to Illinois’ partisan map.

Beyond California and Illinois, Democrats have explored redrawing congressional lines in other states, including New York, New Jersey, Maryland, and Oregon.

In several of these states, courts and independent commissions have imposed limits on redistricting changes, creating legal and political roadblocks.

The proposed California ballot measure will go before voters in less than three months, placing the state in the center of the national conversation over electoral boundaries.

The initiative, if approved, would alter district lines before the 2026 elections, impacting representation in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Neither Newsom’s office nor the California Redistricting Commission provided immediate responses to questions regarding the specific changes proposed in the new plan.

Election officials said the measure will be filed with the Secretary of State’s office ahead of the November vote.

The special election marks another chapter in California’s ongoing redistricting debate, which has been a point of contention since voters shifted authority from the legislature to the commission more than a decade ago.

Democrats Stand with Criminals as DC Police Union Backs Trump’s Crackdown

President Donald Trump announced Monday that his administration will place the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) of Washington, D.C., under federal control and deploy National Guard troops in response to concerns over rising crime in the nation’s capital.

The move follows months of debate over public safety in the District and comes as local officials defend their handling of the situation.

During the announcement, President Trump cited a need for immediate action to address public safety concerns, declaring a federal “public safety emergency” in the city.

The plan includes oversight of the MPD by Attorney General Pam Bondi and additional resources to combat violent crime.

The decision has drawn sharp criticism from several Democratic leaders.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries said there was no basis for the intervention, claiming, “Violent crime in Washington, D.C. is at a thirty-year low.”

Jeffries’ remarks referenced city statistics showing reported violent crime down 26% compared to the same period last year.

D.C. Attorney General Brian Schwalb also condemned the move, calling it “unprecedented, unnecessary, and unlawful.”

In a statement, Schwalb said, “The Administration’s actions are unprecedented, unnecessary, and unlawful. There is no crime emergency in the District of Columbia. Violent crime in D.C. reached historic 30-year lows last year, and is down another 26% so far this year. We are considering all of our options and will do what’s necessary to protect the rights and safety of District residents.”

Maryland Senator Chris Van Hollen criticized the decision as well, describing it as an “authoritarian power grab” and “a dress rehearsal” for broader executive overreach.

The Metropolitan Police Department’s official crime data has come under scrutiny in recent months.

In July, NBC4 Washington reported that MPD Commander Michael Pulliam was under investigation for allegedly directing officers to reclassify certain felony crimes as lesser offenses. Pulliam denied the allegations.

Amid the political dispute, the DC Police Union — representing more than 3,000 officers — issued a statement in support of the federal action.

“The DC Police Union, representing over 3,000 officers of the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD), today acknowledges and supports the President’s announcement this morning to assume temporary control of the MPD in response to the escalating crime crisis in Washington, DC,” the statement said.

“The Union agrees that crime is spiraling out of control, and immediate action is necessary to restore public safety. However, we emphasize that federal intervention must be a temporary measure, with the ultimate goal of empowering a fully staffed and supported MPD to protect our city effectively.”

The union’s position highlights a divide between local officials and rank-and-file officers over how to address crime.

While city leaders point to overall reductions in reported violent crime, law enforcement representatives maintain that on-the-ground conditions justify the president’s actions.

The federal control of the MPD is set to remain in place temporarily, with the stated objective of stabilizing public safety while working toward a return to local oversight.

The National Guard deployment is expected to assist in targeted operations and bolster police presence in high-crime areas.

The Department of Justice and the Department of Homeland Security will work with Attorney General Bondi to coordinate enforcement measures and evaluate progress in reducing criminal activity during the period of federal oversight.

No timeline has yet been announced for the end of the federal control, but administration officials have said the arrangement will be reviewed regularly based on crime data and operational readiness of the MPD.

Mexican President Defends Alleged Narco-Terrorist Maduro Amid U.S. Charges

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum publicly defended Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro this week following new U.S. charges accusing him of leading a narco-terrorist organization and trafficking drugs into the United States.

Earlier in the week, the U.S. Department of Justice announced it had doubled its reward for information leading to Maduro’s arrest from $25 million to $50 million.

The department alleges that Maduro has served for more than a decade as a leader of the Cartel de los Soles, which it designates as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT) group.

The U.S. Treasury Department officially designated the cartel as an SDGT on July 25, 2025.

The DOJ press release stated, “For over a decade, Maduro has been a leader of Cartel de los Soles, which is responsible for trafficking drugs into the United States.”

The statement also accused Maduro of undermining democracy in Venezuela, noting his claim to victory in the July 28, 2024, presidential election despite offering no evidence of such a win.

The United States has refused to recognize Maduro as Venezuela’s president and does not acknowledge the 2024 election results he declared.

Speaking at her daily morning press conference, Sheinbaum dismissed the U.S. allegations and said Mexico has no active investigations linking Maduro to cartel operations in the country.

“As we always have said, if they have any proof, then they must show it,” Sheinbaum said.

“We have no proof related to that.”

Sheinbaum has long maintained close political ties with leftist governments in Latin America and is considered a political ally of Maduro.

Her administration has positioned itself as resistant to U.S. pressure on issues involving foreign leaders aligned with socialist movements in the region.

The new $50 million bounty comes amid a broader U.S. campaign against the Cartel de los Soles.

U.S. officials allege the organization is deeply entrenched within Venezuela’s political and military leadership, facilitating large-scale drug shipments to the United States.

The U.S. indictment builds on earlier charges filed in 2020, when prosecutors first accused Maduro of using his position to assist in drug trafficking operations.

The Justice Department claims these activities have continued, with Maduro maintaining influence over cartel operations while consolidating his political power at home.

In addition to defending Maduro, Sheinbaum also criticized the United States over reports that President Donald Trump may be considering authorizing U.S. military force against Mexican drug cartels.

Without citing specific evidence, Sheinbaum claimed the reports were part of an effort to justify an “invasion” of Mexico.

“We cooperate, collaborate, but there will be no invasion,” Sheinbaum said Friday.

“That is off the table, absolutely off the table.”

Sheinbaum’s remarks highlight the ongoing tension between her administration and Washington over security and foreign policy.

While the U.S. has prioritized targeting transnational criminal organizations through sanctions, law enforcement operations, and potential military action, Mexico’s government has repeatedly signaled its opposition to foreign military involvement on its soil.

The U.S. continues to pursue its case against Maduro and the Cartel de los Soles, emphasizing its willingness to offer unprecedented rewards for information leading to arrests in cases involving high-level narcotics and terrorism charges.

Is it Time to Strip Citizenship from LA Insurrectionists?

The left believes many things that are not true. They believe that men can become women, they believe that children can and should have sex changes, they believe that violent black people are simply misunderstood, and they believe that having borders that define your country is evil.

It’s hard to figure out where to focus, as all of these beliefs are not only false, but they’re obviously lunatic. Used to be that people disagreed over marginal tax rates, how many schools a county needs, or whether to fund a new community pool. Now reality itself is debatable. How do you communicate with someone who thinks that mutilating children’s genitals is not only OK, but an act of “care”?

This week riots are popping off in Los Angeles as illegal aliens, legal immigrants, and American-born leftists “protest” against the Trump administration’s enforcement of immigration laws. The Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency (ICE) has been raiding neighborhoods and employers in the first stage of getting millions of illegal aliens out of the country.

Democrats hate it. California Governor Gavin Newsom and LA Mayor Karen Bass (a trained Marxist-Communist from way back) are claiming they don’t need the National Guard. All the “protestors” throwing bricks onto cop cars from highway overpasses and setting fire to taxi vehicles wouldn’t be doing it, they say, if mean old Donald Trump didn’t “provoke” them by enforcing the law. Newsom actually went to court to try to stop the president from sending in Troops (think about that). Thankfully, he failed.

There’s no way to test this without a survey, but it’s a good bet that nearly every Democrat and leftist believes completely false things about immigration and citizenship. Maybe Republicans, too. For example, did you know that U.S. law explicitly permits the U.S. to revoke citizenship from naturalized U.S. citizens for certain crimes? That’s right. If you come to this country and later gain citizenship, you can have it stripped if you fight against the United States.

Douglas Mackey was sent to prison for making joke posts during the 2016 election; yes, we have political prisoners in the U.S. But it’s not stopping him from pointing out reality:

Attempting to overthrow the government, or bearing arms against the government (as the LA rioters are doing assaulting the police), can get your citizenship ripped up.

X/Twitter users pointed out that even American-born citizens can be stripped of citizenship for treason.

But there are plenty of people who don’t like reality, and who don’t like any attempts to keep rioting scum out of the U.S.

And, of course, a liberal New Yorker “journalist” is on hand to deny that there’s any insurrection or treason going on in LA.

Everyone Agrees: There’s A “Crisis of Confidence” In The Federal Government

In July of 1979, then-President Jimmy Carter took to the airwaves to address the nation about a threat that he believed “strikes at the very heart and soul and spirit of our national will.” Carter called it a “nearly invisible threat” that in many ways goes unnoticed. Carter dubbed it “a crisis of confidence.”

We can see this crisis in the growing doubt about the meaning of our own lives and in the loss of a unity of purpose for our nation. The erosion of our confidence in the future is threatening to destroy the social and the political fabric of America.

But, even during his own trying times, Carter dismissed out of hand the idea that the soul of America was at stake during his “crisis of confidence,” stating, “I do not mean our political and civil liberties.”

“They will endure.”

Forty-five years later, I fear I cannot say the same, as I firmly believe that America faces a new “crisis of confidence” threatening to destroy our social and political fabric.

Ten years ago, you might have dismissed my opinion as conspiratorial nonsense. Yes, we have a growing partisan divide. But no one would dare weaponize the levers of power in government to lord over political rivals.

Anyone paying attention to politics since President Donald Trump shocked the political establishment to its core in 2016 would laugh at our naivete.

When Trump defeated Hillary Clinton, the embodiment of an entrenched political legacy and the poster child of Washington “swamp” culture, a “fight or flight” reflex activated in partisans on the left, breaking a détente which Carter most likely imagined would endure; a silent agreement to never weaponize the powers entrusted to the federal government by We The People against a political rival.

I need not remind you of the myriad ways an unholy union of government power brokers, mainstream media, big tech social media platforms, and government bureaucracy behaved during the Trump years. Merely invoking the name “Hunter Biden” should be sufficient shorthand summarizing the left’s amplification (to the point of absurdity) of “Orange Man Bad” and the suppression of credible facts and circumstance that ran counter to their skewed narrative. From this manipulation spawned a form of fanatical tribalism that saw many politicians crossing lines that Carter took for granted.

Which brings us to the current political climate. It is a climate where it has become commonplace to call fellow Americans a “threat to democracy,” “vicious,” “dangerous,” or “extreme.” It’s a political climate where odious individuals go on national television and say, “They’re still going to have to go out and put a bullet in Donald Trump.”

And wouldn’t you know it? After nearly a decade of ratcheting up the temperature to a boiling point, someone tried to do just that.

Actually, two somebodies.

In the wake of this climate and the two assassination attempts that followed, it would be malpractice to not question what the hell is going on in the federal government. It would also not be unreasonable to debate whether government Is this incompetent or whether the near decade of political tribalism has taken its toll on essential government functions, like the protection of a political rival.

But that is where we are at. In the fallout of these assassination attempts, the latest of which prompted Florida Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis to state that “it is not in the best interests of our state and nation to have the same federal agencies seeking to prosecute Trump leading this investigation.”

It is not just partisans on the right like DeSantis expressing a lack of confidence in the federal government. Even the staunchest voices on the left who are investigating cannot help but to criticize the Biden administration – of which they’re part of – because they too want to know how a shooter got onto a rooftop with a rifle and was able to get off multiple shots killing civilians in what should have been one of the most safe places anyone should have been.

Voices like Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), the chair of the panel charged by the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee – who is no friend of Donald Trump – has expressed his dismay with the federal government failures as well as his opinion that our government has been less than forthcoming with relevant information:

I think the American people are going to be shocked and appalled by our findings as to the lapses and failures —  on that day, at that site, but also more deep seeded — still plaguing the Secret Service, And I think the American people are also going to be deeply disappointed in the Department of Homeland Security, not just in the lapses In performance, but also in its resistance to providing information.

Those are pretty disturbing sentiments, made even more terrifying knowing that a second attempt happened weeks later. Same target. Same agency. Same lapses.

If partisans on both sides of the aisle are so brazenly questioning the effectiveness of the federal government to do its job, how can we not openly do the same?
