Elon Musk Reportedly Considering Purchase of $5 Billion England Soccer Club

Tech billionaire Elon Musk, known for his ventures in technology and space exploration, as well as his influence in politics, may now be setting his sights on the world of sports.

Reports suggest Musk is considering purchasing Liverpool FC, one of the most storied soccer clubs in the English Premier League. Liverpool FC, nicknamed “The Reds,” is one of the most successful teams in English soccer history. The club has amassed 19 league titles, eight FA Cups, a record 10 League Cups, and 16 FA Community Shields.

On the international stage, Liverpool has won six European Cups, three UEFA Cups, four UEFA Super Cups—all English records—and one FIFA Club World Cup.

As of May 2024, Forbes valued Liverpool at $5.37 billion, ranking it as the fourth most valuable football team in the world.

The club’s prestige and financial standing make it an attractive prospect for potential buyers. Errol Musk, Elon’s father, confirmed his son’s interest in Liverpool during an interview with Times Radio. “Oh yes, but that doesn’t mean he’s buying it,” Errol Musk said. “He would like to, yes, obviously, anybody would want to. So would I.”

However, he added, “I can’t comment on that. They’ll raise the price.”

Errol Musk also shared that the family has connections to Liverpool. “We have relatives in Liverpool, and we were fortunate enough to know quite a few of the Beatles because they grew up with us—my family,” he said.

Despite the speculation, Fenway Sports Group (FSG), the current owners of Liverpool FC, has denied any plans to sell the club.

A spokesperson for the group told the Associated Press, “There is no truth to these rumors.”

In September 2023, FSG sold a minority stake in Liverpool to U.S. investment firm Dynasty Equity.

At that time, FSG president Mike Gordon reaffirmed the group’s commitment to the club. “Our long-term commitment to Liverpool remains as strong as ever,” Gordon said.

“We have always said that if there is an investment partner that is right for Liverpool, then we would pursue the opportunity to help ensure the club’s long-term financial resiliency and future growth.”

Musk has recently engaged in British political discourse, particularly following the center-left Labour Party’s victory in the July 2023 general election.

Through his social media platform, X (formerly Twitter), Musk has called for a new election, raising his profile in UK political matters.

While the rumors surrounding Musk’s interest in Liverpool FC have been denied by the club’s current owners, his reputation for bold and unexpected ventures keeps the possibility alive.

Whether Musk’s reported interest will lead to actual negotiations remains to be seen, but the speculation has already sparked discussions in both the sports and business worlds.
