The Navy plans to install Indiana’s first advanced nuclear micro modular reactor at Naval Weapons Station Crane by September 2028, the Pentagon announced Wednesday.
The project will give the strategically important installation a dependable source of electricity that can operate independently from the commercial power grid.
The deployment directly advances President Donald Trump’s 2025 executive order demanding the rapid integration of nuclear power across the military.
That order establishes a goal of placing at least one operational nuclear reactor on a military installation by Sept. 30, 2028.
Naval Weapons Station Crane is now positioned to become the proving ground for that ambitious energy mission.
Rather than leaving critical military operations exposed to civilian grid failures, the Navy intends to secure a constant power source built for demanding national security requirements.
“The MMR installation will provide reliable, around-the-clock power independent of the commercial electric grid, capable of sustaining critical operations under the most demanding conditions,” a Pentagon release said.
That independence matters because military installations cannot afford to go dark when storms, equipment failures, cyberattacks or hostile actions disrupt civilian infrastructure.
A reactor capable of providing continuous electricity offers commanders another layer of resilience when the surrounding grid becomes unreliable.
The project is also expected to support American jobs and strengthen the domestic nuclear supply chain. At a time when Washington has spent years talking about infrastructure resilience, the Trump administration is moving forward with actual hardware at an operational military installation.
The reactor will be the first power producing nuclear reactor installed in Indiana. That makes the Crane project significant not only for the Navy, but also for the state’s growing role in advanced energy technology and national security.
The Army’s Janus Program will help implement the installation alongside the Office of the Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Energy, Installations and Environment.
The Office of the Under Secretary of War for Research and Engineering and the state of Indiana will also participate.
The Janus Program was established to bring nuclear power to military bases while allowing those systems to function independently of nearby municipal electrical networks.
Its purpose reflects a basic operational reality: military readiness should not depend entirely on the same civilian grid serving shopping centers and suburban neighborhoods.
Micro modular reactors are intended to provide steady power in a smaller package than traditional commercial nuclear facilities.
For military installations with specialized missions, that smaller footprint could offer a practical route to energy security without relying on sprawling civilian power projects.
At Crane, the reactor is expected to support critical operations around the clock while reducing vulnerability to outside power interruptions.
That capability could prove especially important during emergencies when electricity demand rises and civilian utilities face their greatest strain.
The Pentagon said it will coordinate closely with federal, state and local partners as the project advances.
Officials pledged that the reactor will be installed in accordance with applicable environmental and safety regulations.
That coordination will be essential because the installation represents a first for Indiana and a major test for military nuclear energy planning.
Successful deployment could provide a model for similar systems at other installations where uninterrupted electricity is central to readiness.
President Trump’s executive order has placed a clear deadline on a bureaucracy that too often turns straightforward military priorities into years of paperwork and committee meetings.
The September 2028 target gives the services a firm objective and puts pressure on officials to deliver an operating reactor rather than another stack of studies.
The Crane announcement also signals a broader shift toward making military infrastructure more self reliant.
While civilian energy debates remain trapped in politics, the military has an immediate responsibility to keep weapons facilities, communications systems and other essential operations functioning under hostile conditions.
If the project stays on schedule, Naval Weapons Station Crane will become the first military installation to meet the reactor objective established under Trump’s 2025 order.
Indiana, meanwhile, will host its first electricity producing reactor while contributing directly to American military readiness and the revival of the nation’s nuclear industrial base.
