Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., has endorsed Florida Democratic U.S. Senate nominee Angie Nixon ahead of Nixon’s November matchup against Republican Sen. Ashley Moody, as reported by Fox News.
Ocasio-Cortez announced her endorsement as Nixon campaigns for the Senate seat in a special general election contest. Nixon, a Florida state representative, secured the Democratic nomination and will now face Moody, who was appointed to the Senate last year by Gov. Ron DeSantis.
“At a time when working families are fighting tooth and nail to make ends meet while the Administration sells them out to corrupt special interests, we need to stand behind leaders who are accountable to working people and stand up to greedy corporations,” Ocasio-Cortez said, according to Nixon’s campaign.

The endorsement places one of the Democratic Party’s most nationally recognized progressive lawmakers behind Nixon as the Florida Democrat prepares for the general election.
Ocasio-Cortez said Nixon would pursue several progressive policy priorities if elected, including universal health care, universal childcare and a national rent freeze.
She also highlighted Nixon’s decision to reject corporate political action committee money.
“Angie Nixon will do just that – from fighting for universal healthcare and childcare to proposing a national rent freeze. Angie will be an exemplary fighter for the working families of Florida and will do it all without a dime of corporate PAC money. Angie did not get here by yielding to major political machines; she did it by building community power and by fiercely committing to her values, and that’s why I’m proud to endorse her for the U.S. Senate,” Ocasio-Cortez added in the statement issued by Nixon’s campaign.
Nixon welcomed the endorsement and said Ocasio-Cortez’s backing would strengthen her campaign heading into the November election.
“I’m honored to have the endorsement of Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and her support as we work towards a better future for Florida,” Nixon said, according to her campaign.
Nixon also praised Ocasio-Cortez as an example of progressive political leadership and said Florida voters were looking for changes in Washington.
“AOC is a fighter and a reminder of what’s possible when you put the needs of the people first, instead of protecting the interests of the wealthy and well-connected. Florida deserves, and is ready for, the kind of leadership in the U.S. Senate that has been absent for far too long. Together, we’re going to fight for everyone: working families, students, and communities who have been ignored for too long. This endorsement adds fuel to an already energized campaign, reinforcing that people are looking forward to real change and representation. I cannot wait to call her my colleague in November,” Nixon added.
The special election follows the departure of former Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., who left the Senate before the end of his term to become secretary of state. DeSantis subsequently appointed Moody to the Senate seat.
Moody, a Republican, has the backing of President Donald Trump as she seeks to retain the seat.
Trump previously weighed in on the Democratic primary, celebrating Nixon’s victory over Lt. Col. Alex Vindman, a retired Army officer who also competed for the Democratic nomination.
In a Truth Social post last month, Trump sharply criticized Vindman while predicting Nixon would lose to Moody in the general election.
“The most gratifying loss last night was that of a real treasonous creep, Alexander Vindman, to a Radical Left Lunatic, who can’t speak or think properly, and who will go down to certain defeat at the hands of Ashley Moody, a truly Fantastic Senator, from the Great State Florida. Vindman, if you remember, was the one who lied about my ‘Perfect Call’ with President Zelenskyy of Ukraine, only to find out that the conversation was routinely recorded and proved that I was 100% in the right (Completely Innocent!),” Trump declared in the post.
Trump continued his criticism of Vindman while discussing the impeachment proceedings involving his call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
“It was, indeed, a Perfect Call, and the Dumocrats Fake Impeachment effort massively failed. Vindman should be prosecuted for what he did!” Trump added.
Nixon has previously drawn attention for positions on several election-related issues. Resurfaced clips have highlighted her past support for abolishing the Electoral College and implementing ranked-choice voting.
The contest between Nixon and Moody is expected to offer Florida voters a clear choice between two candidates backed by different wings of the national political parties.
Nixon now enters the general election with Ocasio-Cortez’s endorsement, while Moody has Trump’s support.
The election will determine who serves the remainder of Rubio’s Senate term following his departure for the State Department.
