As we reported on Friday, a former New Mexico county judge and his wife were cuffed and taken into federal custody Thursday after authorities discovered they were housing a Tren de Aragua member.
Former Doña Ana County Magistrate Judge Joel Cano and his wife, Nancy Cano, had their home raided by Immigration and Customs Enforcement earlier this week.
Later, CNN anchors had meltdowns, calling the development “aggressive, dramatic, and significant.”
“This is something that we have certainly not seen before, but appears to be part of this aggressive approach the Trump administration has toward immigration,” said CNN’s Katelyn Polantz.
Blitzer called it “very dramatic and significant indeed” while noting the rarity of such an action.
Watch:
FBI Director Kash Patel, posting on X, wrote:
“We believe Judge Dugan intentionally misdirected federal agents away from the subject to be arrested in her courthouse, Eduardo Flores Ruiz, allowing the subject — an illegal alien — to evade arrest. Thankfully, our agents chased down the perp on foot and he’s been in custody since, but the Judge’s obstruction created increased danger to the public.”
The arrests highlight the Trump administration’s intensified crackdown on illegal immigration as FBI Director Patel adopts a more aggressive approach to immigration-related law enforcement.
This is not the first time a judge has been arrested under President Trump for aiding illegal immigrants.
During Trump’s first term, Massachusetts Judge Shelley Joseph was charged with helping an illegal alien evade ICE.
New Mexico Judge Joel Cano resigned last year after federal agents arrested an illegal gang member living on his family’s property.
Cano is now permanently barred from serving in any judicial role, reinforcing the administration’s commitment to enforcing immigration laws at every level.
